I believe everyone agrees with Maya Angelou. I, for one, can accept my own death, however I can’t accept the death of my mom, dad, sisters, or any loved ones. I think it’s the same for everyone. It’s true that if we are so angered by the death of a loved one it will lead to our death, perhaps by depression.…

On the subject of heroism, Maya Angelou once wrote that “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people” (Angelou). The general picture that comes to mind when the word “hero” is said is the idea of Superman or Wonder Woman; however, a true hero is anyone who tries to make their world a better place. Odysseus, the hero in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, fought in the Trojan War and embarked on a ten year journey to return to his kingdom, Ithaca. During his quest to return home, he encounters many supernatural forces that show both his heroic, and not so heroic actions. He faces countless challenges, meets new people, and has to make sacrifices for the overall benefit of his crew (Bowler and Homer 645-705).…

Heroism can only truly be defined subjectively. Every single one of us can discover courageous qualities within any individual: it all depends on which endeavors a person finds heroic. In my opinion, a hero is someone who displays bravery or self sacrifice in the face of misfortune. They are not afraid to intervene and rectify what they see is wrong, despite the situation. Challenges may be confronted along the way, but a hero will arrive stronger than before. They will finish by attempting to or fully producing a positive impact on society. My personal role model is Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a leader of the women’s rights movement during the 19th century. She is someone who manifested all of these heroic traits by combatting the sexist ideas people had during this era. Throughout the course of her life, she shattered the expectations…

Heroism is being passionate. Whether that passion be for a person, for art, equality, etc, it is what drives someone to be extraordinary. It makes them fight, it makes them stand up, it ignites the fire in a hero's heart. For instance, Sylvia Rivera, while making a speech for the Stonewall movement, said, "I'll be the first one to step on any organization, and politician's…

A hero is someone who cares about other people's lives than their own. Many people can call themselves a hero but don’t act like a hero. For example, in the book The Odyssey by Homer, the main character Odysseus is sailing with his men after the Trojan War, and he sees himself as a hero. On his way home from the battle a terrible storm had hit that was made by Zeus, the god of all gods, and his way home was turned into an adventure. Odysseus’ actions on the adventure makes his a very disrespectful guy, that caused his own imprisonment because he invaded Polyphemus’ cave and stayed, when he didn’t tell his men about Scylla and Charybdis when they were approaching them, and the fact that he let his men eat the sun god’s, Helios’, cattle.…

Maya Angelou once stated, “Courage is the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can't practice any other virtue consistently.” To many extents, this declaration is true. Her words explain to us that it is impossible to take action, if one does not have the confidence to do so. With this statement, Maya Angelou describes the sheer power of courage and its importance in life. Even in difficult situations, courage has the power to prevail over the hardships. Some of these tough times include those of the Holocaust and in the apartheid era of South Africa. Regardless of the horrific conditions they are placed in, the characters of Night, Bruno of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, and Nelson Mandela all display a great deal of courage,…

The stereotypical hero is brave, strong, nearly flawless, a lifesaver, and usually at least semi-intelligent. This archetype simply does not often appear in real life, unlike my definition of a hero – someone who tries to be the best person they possibly can be. I believe heroism is defined or reached by being gutsy, devoted, and benevolent, never being unfair, cruel or inhumane, and standing up for what you believe in.…

This is why selflessness is another important factor in what it means to be a hero. A hero takes action for the purpose of helping others, without hidden motives or personal agendas. Heroes are willing to forget about their own needs when faced with the needs of others. One such example of selflessness is found in the story of Victoria Soto. The schoolteacher was only 27 years old when she gave her life trying to shield her young students during the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in Connecticut. This action shows selflessness in its most pure form, completely abandoning concern for oneself in the process of helping, or in this case saving, others. While sacrificing ones life to save another’s is an extreme example of this, it can also be found in the actions of the everyday heroes that surround us. A working single mother is an example of a selfless hero that we are surrounded by in our day-to-day life. While she isn’t literally giving her life for anyone, a single mother who has to work long hours and sacrifice sleep and other wants to provide for her children is displaying selflessness and most certainly establishing herself as a hero to her children and those around her. “A hero is somebody who is selfless, who is generous in spirit, who just tries to give back as much as possible and help people. A hero to me is someone who saves people and who really deeply cares.” – Debi…

The definition of hero varies among people but, in my definition of a Hero is a person who is able to achieve the difficult task regardless of the resistance of society or sacrificing themselves in risky situations. A hero is not a person who is easily scared, gives up easily and selfish. In my opinion, when people are described as “hero” we neglect their bad behaviors, but this doesn’t imply to every hero we should be aware of such things because we all have our own flaws.…

“I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people” (Maya Angelou). Even though some people may not appreciate them it doesn’t mean that a hero won’t always be there to help. Being a hero takes sacrifice such as people may not like them, their life could be on the line, and the amount of time they spend trying to make this world better. Many heroes in history have spent their whole lives fighting for a cause that sometimes doesn’t happen until years after they’ve died. But it was their choice, their life, their dream and hero’s fight to make them happen. So even though being a hero takes extraordinary sacrifice, it also takes countless amounts of dedication to want to make a change in the world.…
