Maya Angelou Graduation
In an essay, “Graduation” by Maya Angelou, who was an African-American civil rights activist, writer and a poet, she talks about what her graduation from the 8th grade meant to her.
Over the course of the day, there were 5 main events that helped make the day stand out in her memory; the first of which was the day itself, “Amazingly the great day finally dawned” (pg. 79).
At breakfast, there are three surprises waiting for her; a poem book by Edgar Allan Poe, a Mickey Mouse watch and a Sunday breakfast on Friday“... a collection of poems by Edgar Allan Poe… Momma made a Sunday breakfast although it was only Friday… to find the watch on my plate” (pg. 79).
When the ceremony begins. she feels assured that everything will stay on track; however,
