Masters Of Sex Analysis
Personality is everywhere and in everyone. There are sixteen personality types, five personality domains or traits with countless sub-traits. An interesting approach to personality is through sexuality and the two partners who revolutionized the field of sex. Showtime’s series Masters of Sex is based off of the real lives and work of Bill Masters and Virginia Johnson. Masters was a doctor of obstetrics and gynecology at Maternity Hospital at Washington University. While Johnson was a single mother of two who had no credentials at first but worked as a secretary for Masters. Maier said, “Masters wanted to understand exactly how the body worked so that they could come up with therapies to fix the various different problems that married couples would have in the bedroom”(n.d.). Before the 1960s very little was known about human sexuality and sex and how to treat it. People would burry it within themselves, confide to their religious teachers, or seek help from a therapist because sex wasn’t seen in society as the typical “norm” topic of conversation. The therapist during this time frame of the 50s and 60s, were heavily Freudian in their training and the patients hardly saw any improvements. One question that gets tossed around in the field of psychology is “Does personality exist?” Personally, it would be difficult to believe otherwise because as humans we are all created differently in the sense of our DNA in our families’ gene pool. Lets take it a step farther then. In the series Masters of Sex, we have Dr. Masters and his research partner Virginia Johnson, one is male and the other female and this alone contributes to proof of personalities, different ones at that. As mentioned earlier most therapists were Freudian and thus implemented psychoanalysis treatment for their patients but this was time consuming and could last years, and it also was not very successful. So in turn was the birth of Masters & Johnson’s sex therapy in the 60s. Sex therapy can treat a multitude of physical and emotional issues like: lack of sex drive, negative attitude/fear of sex caused by trauma, self-esteem problems, conflict with values or beliefs, sexual addiction, and many more. Masters & Johnson having both a male and female therapist, implemented talk therapy and physical assessments to help patients.
