The Interrelationship between Culture and Visual Entertainment Media

Visual entertainment media has gone from being about families to being about everything. Visual entertainment media explains the meaning in the name, “entertainment”. The media today shows what society has come to tolerate over the years when it comes to movies and television shows. Before television and even radio, we read the news in the newspaper or heard it from someone else that heard it from someone else. Besides the newspaper the only other entertainment was plays and listening to the church choir sings. This all changed when the radio was introduced. People could now hear the news and other entertainment like plays and radio shows, which was a good thing for the people that could not read. With the radio came music other than gospel, which society came to tolerate, so there was more made. Introducing the television, the first ones were huge, black and white, and very expensive for most families to buy. The shows from the radio where now being acted out on the television so people could see what was going on instead of using their imaginations. The television became so popular that color was added to enhance viewing and drive up sales. The small skit shows turned into longer shows with a running plot that was on every week. The longer shows soon turned into movies that people could go to drive-ins and watch in their vehicles. Movies were an even bigger hit than television, because now people could watch color movies about things they could only imagine. As all these changes are developing so are the tolerances about what is proper to be heard and seen. At first there were mostly church sermon, the news, and gospel music, but then more popular music was being made with suggestive wording. It was frowned upon at first but eventually society came to tolerate it. The same goes for television, at first it was the small skit shows from the radio and news, then longer shows with running plots that addressed all sorts of topics, and then the movies, where swear words were being used and nudity was unleashing itself. All of these things were frowned upon at first but as time went on people became more tolerating or just did not listen or watch the things that bothered them. I think the influences of visual entertainment media is a positive for our society. Evolving from where we began to the visual media of today has given us as a society experiences we may have never had. Visual entertainment media has also become like a time capsule for generations to come. They can go back and watch a movie from our time and see what it was really like and how visual entertainment media has shaped the American culture.

As we read about earlier during the Progressive era, muckrakers became very important to pop- culture by exposing the goings on of corrupt political leaders, the appalling conditions in factories and underhanded dealings of corporations all mostly with good intentions. But what the media soon figured out was that gossip also sold papers by capturing the public's attention, which therefore turned into a huge amount revenue. With the introduction of radio and films during the 1920's and throughout the 1930's the influence of spreading propaganda and news grew to become an even bigger influence on what the public thought about important issues.…

After reading “Adolescent Room Culture: Studying Media in the Context of Everyday Life” by Jeanne Steele and Jane Brown, study the uses and gratifications of literature. Have a look at your life. Where do practice and theory seem to match up, and where do they pass like ships in the night? Keep a “media uses and gratifications” diary for you and your family or friends for a week. Use the diary as raw material for your study. Organize the diary to deliver information about questions you want answered.

Can you apply Steele and Brown to what you have observed, or do you need to modify their model? Can you think of a better representation? How will you construct your model? Which questions is it intended to address? In all cases, take adequate time for reflection at the end of your essay: What did you achieve? Where did you go wrong? How could you improve? And how does this project affect your opinion of existing research? Check with your tutor for ethical guidelines if you wish to use data from other people.…

Mass media includes print media like newspapers and magazines, electronic media like radio, television, movies and new digital media like, internet, and blogs. The history of mass media is very long; it goes back beyond recorded history to the people that figured out that they could reach a larger audience through drawing pictures on cave walls rather than just telling the story to whoever was around at that time. As we read on, let us focus on what were the major developments in the evolution of mass media during the last century, how each development influence American culture, what is meant by the…

In closing, many people who argue for unnecessarily high restrictions on firearms do not do research on the actual statistics and facts and instead rely on moral principles blame guns destructive possibilities without giving a thought of other options of destruction. Let us say that a ban was placed on firearms. Honestly, who would listen to this new governmental demand. Few law-abiding citizens would gladly hand over all firearms for the “perceived betterment of the state.” But more than likely many people would not turn over their weapons specifically criminals based on the fact they have not followed a law in their lives, thus making them criminals. The perceived notion that criminal organizations would just hand over the only thing that makes that old lady hand over her purse or the bank teller hand over the money is absurd and a fallacy of an idealistic world. If criminals are the only ones left with guns (omitting police and military,) who is going to stop them from looting a local store or home by the time the police get their it will be too late? Criminals would no longer have to fear the average Joe from pulling a gun on them while they rob him. If anything, crime would get even worse and criminals would become even more brazen and ludicrous. If we sent police and other law enforcement to retrieve the weapons from criminals tension between police and criminals would surely rise increasing violence against police. Also, as was seen during prohibition, people might try to make their own guns, just like bathtub gin, and end up blowing themselves up and causing more injury than with properly built firearms today. What will work is to develop a system that recognizes the different types of targets. So that trying to shoot a person would result in the gun not firing and authorities being called. This would help ensure that the guns still can be used for things like hunting and sport. Also, we need to help potential future criminals realize that they do not have…

I’ll go ahead and say it: Neal Gabler's "Life the Movie" makes valid points. Because of America's dependence on technology-based media entertainment it is impossible not to interact with the distracting and alluring world of expressive communication. The world we live in today is sadly not the one that Henry David Thoreau was able to circumnavigate for two years in 1845. Today, to avoid media, is to be totally shut away from the world. Gone are the days of subtle newsprint and objective journalism. They have been trampled by 24-hour news cycles and narcissism-based social networking sights like Twitter and Facebook. While I can’t help but agree with Gabler on the media’s degenerative effects, there is a brighter side to a globalized system of entertainment. Entertainment can certainly ruin society if given the chance. Take for instance, MTV’s “Jersey Shore”. A show with absolutely no moral integrity, but simple humor and sex appeal can make money, so realistically; executives will invest in more of the same material. At the same time, hate/fear-mongering media moguls like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh have a devoted, if not cult-like following of 60-somethings that they control in the name of “entertainment”. Clearly, entertainment has the capacity to ruin the structure of society, for better or worse. Whereas sites like Twitter and Facebook can be detrimental to society, they can also cause positive progress. Very recently, young Iranian revolutionaries used Twitter as a means of communication, education, and unity. Videos of citizens beaten to death in the streets were accompanied by calls to action, as a youthful and courageous Iranian population revolted against its oppressive government on the computer and TV screens of the globalized world. Furthermore, recent crisis like the tsunamis in Indonesia, hurricane in New Orleans, and earthquakes in Haiti were brought into the homes of the prosperous and caring across the world. Although tragic, these events…

Mass media during the last century has come at us in different ways. The use television and radio to spread the news. Than more recently it is the internet that has played a big factor in spreading news at a faster rate. Many people are easily influenced by what they see on television, radio or internet. The media has a way of spreading stories true or not and can be damaging if not true. One example of the media influencing people would be 9/11. They have for years tried to keep several pieces of information from the public. Believe it or not the government does control our media and they decide what stories to release to the public and which stories to remain a mystery. Another way that mass media is playing a role in people’s lives is through video games. Video games which most are violent can train your main to accept violence is an acceptable no big deal type of matter. We are basically training our children to be killers and get accustom to killing. To me that is a brain washing method. A lot movies watch can influence your mind more than you think. For instance when I first watched Fast and Furious, that movie influenced me in a big way. I left the movies wanting to street race and drive at high speeds. Shortly after that movie came out I was street racing and fixing up Hondas in to street racers. On a different note, Music is a main mass media evolution in itself. Most musicians are tied into evil and you can see hear it in the modern music. If you look closely at the music videos and listen to the words, the symbolism is there and most people are blinded to the truth of what is really being portrayed in these songs. I use to listen to rap music and I discovered to evil truth behind it, one video that many people should pay attention to is Lil Wayne’s “she’s on fire” video. The video is basically is a satanic ritual in which he is excepting the devil in his life. The symbolism is all through the…
