Mass Effect: Sci-Fi Gaming at Its Finest Bioware is a video game company known for its many famous game series such as Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age, Knights of the Old Republic, and Mass Effect. Mass Effect is an RPG (Role-Playing Game) style third-person shooter that has been released on the following consoles: Xbox 360, PC, and the Playstation 3. Mass Effect has many great things about it, an interesting storyline to follow, excellent graphics, and wonderful gameplay. The storyline in Mass Effect is extremely creative, interesting, and fairly simple to follow. It’s an adventure through the stars and planets afar, trying to save the future of all races. Playing Mass Effect is like playing a movie (Gamer Excitement 2). It has a great space-age plot that draws you in and just envelops you into the story, and by the end of it leaves you wanting more. The characters in the story are so dynamically different, whether it’s just by their erratically different personalities or even being different races. It has everything. Game Informer Magazine describes Mass Effect as “one of the greatest science fiction stories ever told” (Gamer Excitement 1). This story involves the Human race trying to prove its strength and intelligence to numerous alien races, while trying to fight off enemy aliens that are planning the annihilation of all humans. Mass Effect is placed in the year 2183, and is about Commander Shepard, a human military officer in the Alliance Navy, and his journey throughout the universe. It starts off with Shepard being tested to become a Spectre, an elite force in galactic affairs. Along his journey he runs into Saren, a Turian (an alien race) possessed by an ancient Sentient Being known only as Sovereign, who is bent on galactic domination. Shepard must collect an elite team of soldiers of many different races and specialties on the road to beating Saren. Throughout this story, the characters

As technology has grown immensely in the past century, we have seen the rise of many movies surrounding this topic. Movies ranging from family friendly flicks about the bond between a fighting machine and boy while others explore the science behind technological advances in educational films. However, the large majority seem to highlight the morbid possibility of what could happen when technology turns against us. These examples are found all throughout the media, but are dramatized to a whole new degree on movie posters. In my case, I am specifically referencing both the 2001: a space odyssey poster as well as the recently released Ex Machina poster. Both posters are meant to pitch the idea of where technology is going to be taking us. Yet, in the 2001: space odyssey the message is lacking and bordering on tangent to the movie in comparison to Ex Machina. On one side we see a poster about an epic adventure through space, but is conveyed in a poor way that takes away from the enjoyment of a topic such as space. Whereas on the other hand, we have the Ex Machina poster conveying a dark and eerie feeling that sells the movie exactly for what it is. Though Ex Machina is a clear winner here, to truly understand such rationale we must deeply analyze the visual rhetoric in both posters.…

First of all, Halo 4’s campaign story is well composed and electrifying to the player. The story begins from the past events from Halo 3. In the campaign, the plot of the story cuts deep into the main characters’ minds. In this case, the main characters are Cortana, an artificial intelligence and Masterchief or John-117, a scientifically engineered super-soldier. The conflict of the story is both external and internal as John and Cortana both have to face the wrath of an ancient alien race that they’ve awoken from an ancient slumber, John is dealing with himself whether he’s a machine or a human, and Cortana is trying to control her rampancy, the part of an AI’s life where they basically think themselves to death. The events that happen in the story are dramatic, and exhilarating to watch. When you play, you just want to know what happens next in the story. The settings and scenes in the campaign are both colorful and full of life.…

In Ridley Scott’s film “Alien” the world is introduced to new slimy villain in this 1979 horror sci-fi film. That villain is no other than an alien predator whose instincts is to kill anything moving. The alien is stuck in a commercial spacecraft that has six human crew members and an android. After reading articles about science fiction films I really understood how unique and ahead of its time this film was. it doesn’t go the same route that other sci-fi films go through during the 1970s like the Star Wars (1977), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), and Close encounter of the Third Kind (1977).…

How many times has Hollywood taken a true story and turned it into something different? Hollywood took Chris McCandless’s story and turned it into an overdramatic work of art. Unlike Krakauer’s nonfiction best seller Into the Wild, the movie Into the Wild by Sean Penn overemphasizes ideas or fails to include crucial evidence which twists the viewers understanding of Chris McCandless’s life. The movie overemphasizes Chris’s parents’ relationship and the effect it has on him, creates a love interest for him in “Slab City”, and fails to mention Chris’s knowledge of the wild. Sean Penn’s film skews how people will remember Chris McCandless.…

tThe sScience fFiction film genre and is claimed to be unique, but there are many similarities between the seven main films. During your time in the class, “History on Film B” you will watch eventful movies based on different genres that define that genre and their time period. My class had the genre of “Science Fiction” and we watched two Star Wars movies, one of them being “Star Wars: A New Hope” which came out before the newest one, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” In the movie, “A New Hope” a evil power called the Siths rise to power and plan to take over the galaxy unless one person, the newest and soon to be most powerful Jedi, Luke Skywalker defeats them. Living among Mother nature is something that many people take for granted. It provides beauty, untold resources, and homes for humans and many other living creatures. These days nature has taken a back seat as humans continue to tear down, exploit, and colonize land without regard for nature. The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury, presents a parallel existence between Martians and Native Americans in order to illustrate that humans do not value and respect nature.…
