Marxist Reading Of Othello
Iago is a character who manipulated every character in Othello because of his need for power, which places his motives in the marxist arena. Marxist criticism is defined as the perspective that economics provides the foundation for all social, political, and ideological reality, As stated in the springboard book. Iago has definite plans in order to achieve his goal of power and he will stop at nothing, including murder to get it.
At the beginning of the story Cassio was chosen over Iago by othello to be Lieutenant. From that point Iago started his ways of manipulating the other characters. It started with him trying to get othello out of the way; He went to brabantio’s house and convinced him something was stolen from him. “wake up, Brabantio! …show more content…
So at this point he put his biggest and final plan in motion. He convinced cassio to spend more time with desdemona to get her to get othello to give cassio his rank as lieutenant back. “ I’ll tell you what to do. Othello’s wife has a lot of influence now. He’s completely devoted to her. Go open your heart to her…. I bet my lucky stars your problem will be forgotten” Iago says to Cassio. This was the start of his evil plan getting set up by getting cassio to be with desdemona more. The next step was to get othello to notice it then to get him jealous. After telling othello of stories about cassio and desdemona’s love life he makes up a story about desdemona giving cassio her handkerchief. “ i seen him wiping his beard with it” Iago tells othello. Othello then asked desdemona about its whereabouts but she had misplaced it. Othello got upset and the plans was going accordingly. Emilia then steals the handkerchief and gives it to Iago.
Iago plants the handkerchief in cassio’s room and it takes it’s course then it’s finally revealed in front of othello when bianca gets upset with cassio. At this point Othello believes Iago and together they come up with a plan to kill Cassio and Desdemona. As a result of all these plans coming into play Iago kills Roderigo and his wife and convinced othello to kill
