Martocchino Compensation
Joseph J. Martocchino states that, “Compensation represents both the intrinsic and extrinsic rewards employees receive for performing their jobs and for their membership as employees” (3). Compensation can be in the form of money and also services or discounts. Monetary rewards or bonuses and vacations are common in many work places. Other examples include healthcare for the employee and possibly his/her family also, 401K, retirement, salary incentives, child care assistance and even time shares. Compensation does cost companies money but its effect on employees is worth the cost in the long run. Financial compensation can affect employees with financial gain that they typically would not be able to achieve without their hard work and the companies reward. This includes stock, partial or whole paid health care, life insurance and discounts. While not all of these are cash in hand it can be turned into cash in hand or allow them to save on what they would have had to pay for out of their own pocket. This can also affect employees in future ways also, by offering free or greatly discounted education or child care. …show more content…
Some people believe that this act is not enforced as thoroughly as it should be. The act states, "prohibits wage discrimination based on sex, race, or national origin among employees for work in 'equivalent jobs'" (pay-equity.org). To help the government enforce this law employees need to report issues they see otherwise it may go unnoticed. Former employee Tyler Threatte of a Statesville business stated that the business “started men out at $7.25 an hour and women at $7.10 an hour”. The reasoning that they gave was because the men could remove the cooked pig from the pit and the women couldn’t, even though several of the women could.
