Martin Luther vs. Karlstadt and Muntzer
After the Diet of Worms, Luther had to find a place where he would be out of harms way. A Prince close to Luther took him away to Wartburg. He was safe physically, but not emotionally; for while there, he could not defend his ideas and it hurt and angered Luther more than a dagger ever could.

While Luther was away, Andreas Bodenstein von Karlstadt (famous for changes in the church) and Thomas Muntzer took it upon themselves to be the new leaders of the reformation.

Karlstadt was a lot like Luther; he shared some of the same ideas, and was also a professor at Whittenburg. Muntzer learned a lot from Luther and at first looked up to him as well. However, these kind things didn't last very long.

Luther criticized both these men because of the new ways they where teaching. In Luther's letter "Opposition of the Fanatic Spirit" he states, "These prophets have little sympathy, taste, or understanding"; "They...want people to be amazed at their great skill". It seems that he feels Karlstadt is only in it for the glory of himself and because of it "Christ is forgotten".

Luther is not any more pleasant in his critiquing of Muntzer. In his letter to the "Princes of Saxony concerning the rebellious Spirit", he mentions that Muntzer wants to, "enforce faith in an immediate and dictatorial manner". It's obvious Luther doesn't agree with this tactic.

I think that it's easy to say that both Karlstadt and Muntzer would want to respond to the criticism and have people listen; however, being the popular man Luther already was made it tough for them to get through to the more important people. For example, Luther's letters stated above probably had more people follow his word then Muntzer's rebuttal in his letter to Frederick the Wise. Muntzer was furious with Luther's letter calling Luther a, "mendacious man" and states that Luther is a, "pompous tyrant, and full of ferocity and hate."

    Luther initially begins by trying to appeal to their sense of logic by listing multiple reasons why he must go to Birmingham. Luther states that Christ had traveled to the far corners of the Greco Roman world, so he must do the same with the carrying of the gospel of freedom. By using a biblical reference, the clergymen would be more inclined to agree with Luther because the Bible is their life. He uses these references throughout the entire letter. Since Luther is utilizing the Bible, the clergymen must see the sense as to why he would want to go to Birmingham, which would convince them to agree with Luther. In lines 40-47, Luther also gives many examples of Birmingham not being reasonable, and declining any negotiations. The clergymen were asking Luther why he would not reach out to the leaders of Birmingham before coming in to the city. By giving the examples of the rejection of the leaders of Birmingham, the clergymen would have to see the logic as to why Luther would want to come to Birmingham. The clergymen clearly did not recognize the fact that Luther had already reached out to the clergymen, and had been denied by them.     There were three key figures who influenced the Protestant Reformation. Martin Luther was one of the most significant people during the Protestant Reformation. Luther believed in “justification by faith alone,” or that faith alone will save you from hell. Luther wrote the 95 Theses which were against indulgences and criticized the Church. He also wrote his three pamphlets; Address to the Christian Nobility, Babylonian Captivity of the Church, and Freedom of a Christian. Luther presented his views on reformation to the Diet of Worms and was declared an outlaw. Another important figure was Ulrich Zwingli. Zwingli was the leader of the Swiss Reformation and was humanistically educated. Zwingli was also did not like the idea of indulgences.
