Marshall McLuhan
The media has changed the lives of humans since day one. The affect it has made on our lives has changed the life style of humans by forming new cultures. One famous philosopher shows his main concerns with the effect of media and technology and how it influences humans. Marshall McLuhan has introduced different theories to present his beliefs and philosophies on the social media and other technologies. Marshall McLuhan was born in Alberta Canada, in the year of 1911. McLuhan attended the University of Manitoba to receive his Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in English. A University Gold Medal in Arts and Sciences was also rewarded to him. McLuhan continued his education at Cambridge University to receive his Bachelor’s Degree and became a doctor of philosophy. Once he completed his education, he went on to teach at other universities. A selected few of the universities that McLuhan had taught in were the University of Wisconsin, St. Louis University, Assumption University, and University of St. Michael’s College (marshallmcluhan.com/biography/). McLuhan made an oath that he would never become a teacher. He did not care for his professors at Cambridge University. McLuhan continued to learn in malice to bother his professors. Although he swore to never become an academic, he became a professor of English. Marshall McLuhan suffered from a stroke in September of 1979. This affected McLuhan’s ability to speak. McLuhan observed others and had one phrase that he said repeatedly. “You know nothing of my work.” was often said to those who would disagree with McLuhan. Although McLuhan passed in his sleep in December of 1980, his theories still live on (http://spectrum.library.concordia.ca/). Marshall McLuhan had a number of major works. McLuhan had presented the myriad of his

Marshall McLuhan said, “All media exist to invest our lives with artificial perceptions and arbitrary values”. Yet the media is very important in how so many people get to know the world around them. For example, when the lower and middle class do not interact with the upper class, it is impossible for them to understand about the upper class. The only way most of the other classes understand the upper class is through media portrayal. Media is one of the biggest networks in the world at the present day. It has been the significant part of the human life. Everyone is directly involved in and spends so many of his or her waking hours with some form of the media. Television, radio, newspaper, books, internet & social network…

From popup windows, chat rooms, blog posts, and links to follow to obtain more details – seemingly offering more but leaving the reader with less. Carr elaborates on this point by making the comparison of a deep sea scuba diver who emerges himself into the ocean to observe the beauty of nature, as he previously engaged in research in the library, walking up and down the aisles, hunting down the appropriate materials to dive into. Now, with the birth of the Internet, the hunting has become more like surveying the scenery. No longer submerged deep within the ocean as Carr states, “Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a jet ski” (Carr, 2008). Carr explains it is no longer necessary to comb through shelves of books but to simply access what is needed and jump from link to link. Similar to a rock skipping across a pond, the internet allows the consumer to skim through seemingly endless amounts of information. This convenience however, comes with a price. Marshall McLuhan, media theorist points out that media is responsible for shaping our thoughts, minds, and ability to process details (Carr, 2008). Carr illustrates McLuhan’s point effectively throughout his piece with descriptive examples and elaborates how the Internet has weakened our ability to…
