Marley And Me Analysis
The two films that we watched this week were Marley & Me and Turner and Hooch. In both films, the wild, unruly, and rowdy dogs are kept by owners who do not know how to handle them but eventually end up loving the dogs to death. Hooch is a huge dog that becomes the only eye witness to a murder while Marley, on the other hand, is a house pet that is out of control. Having the dogs as the main characters contributed to both of the movies by making it easier to see the the overall theme. A dog isn’t a person who can just listen to what you are saying and follow instructions, they are pets who have their characteristics that won’t change which makes their owner have to adjust. Marley’s first use was as a house dog that the owner, John, got for his wife so she wouldn’t expect him to want a child but Marley ended up as so much more. Marley is definitely one of a kind and is the most disobedient, troublesome, and reckless dog in Florida but he doesn’t think he’s that way, Marley is just energetic and wants to have fun. The theme of Marley & Me is perseverance, which is something that certainly applied to the Grogans. Marley has put his owners, Jennifer and John, through many hardships and has gotten them in trouble more times than not with his presence. In particular, when Marley was kicked out of obedience school because he attacked the instructor or when Jennifer and John went on a trip to Ireland and Marley traumatized the sitter so much that she let him tear up the house and called him “evil with a dog’s face”. One element of Marley that contributed to the theme of perseverance would be his energy and playfulness. Time and time again, John and Jennifer, and others around them as well, had to face the consequences of Marley’s impulsive and rash behaviors but someway somehow, they got through it. No matter how many times Marley has eaten something that he wasn’t supposed to, tore up the furniture, or ran out and forced his owners to chase after him, the Grogans still found a way to endure Marley’s extreme playfulness and love him unconditionally. That is what the whole movie was about and having Marley as the main character helped to convey
