Markov case study
Markov Analysis and Forecasting The Doortodoor Sports Equipment Company sells sports clothing and equipment for amateur, light sport (running, tennis, walking, swimming, badminton, golf) enthusiasts. It is the only company in the nation that does this on a door‐to door basis, seeking to bypass the retail sporting goods store and sell directly to the customer. Its salespeople have sales kits that include both sample products and a full line catalog they can use to show and discuss with customers. The sales function is composed of full‐time and part time salespeople (level 1), assistant sales managers (level 2), and regional sales managers (level3). The company has decided to study the internal movement patterns of people in the sales function, as well as to forecast their likely availabilities in future time periods. Results will be used to help identify staffing gaps (surpluses and shortages) and to develop staffing strategy and plans for future growth.
To do this, the HR department first collected data for 2010 and 2011 to construct a transition probability matrix, as well as the number of employees for 2012 in each job category. It then wanted to use the matrix to forecast availabilities for 2013. The following data were gathered:

Based on the above data:
1.Describe the internal labor market of the company in terms of job stability (staying in same job), promotion paths and rates, transfer paths and rates, demotion paths and rates, and turnover (exit) rates.
2. Forecast the numbers available in each job category in 2013.
3. Indicate potential limitations to your forecasts.

FastFit Sporting Goods is a successful New England regional supplier of sporting goods to the high end consumer market. They sell an exclusive selection of equipment and apparel to men and women who exercise and pursue outdoor activities on a regular basis. They operate five (5) upscale retail stores in the New England market that offer a high level of customer attention, with a headquarters (HQ) is in Burlington, Massachusetts, and a single warehouse, distribution, and eCommerce fulfillment center in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Most of their products are purchased from two suppliers, Winter Gear Distributers outside of Providence, Rhode Island, and Boston Fitness Supplies in Marlboro, Massachusetts. FastFit has expanded successfully in the New England area over the past five years. However to expand nationally as a major retailer, they need to improve the scalability of their operations (stores and warehouses). A key part of their strategy is to leverage information systems to automate and improve operations, to strengthen management controls, and to enable significant growth while maintaining the “high touch” customer experience. A diagram of their complete non-Web based operations follows. See figure 1.…

In Week 2 the discussion was about employee relations. To identify recruitment and selection strategies and methods as part of the workforce. Understanding and differentiate between job analysis, job description, and job specification. Discussing about the process an organization uses to ensure that it has the right amount and the right kinds of people to deliver a certain level of output or services in the future. Learning of the forecasting techniques which are quantitative and qualitative, a variety of mathematically techniques has been developed to estimate labor demand and supply. Also, ensuring that the HR department has accurate job descriptions for advertised openings is helpful in ensuring that the right applicants are recruited. This reduces the need for sorting through applicants that are not qualified to perform the job duties advertised which can result in time lost, thus making the recruiter more productive in selecting qualified applicants to interview for openings. In addition to have accurate job descriptions for new recruits and new job openings, having existing positions with up to date job descriptions ensures that the existing employees are aware of job functions and aware of any new job duties that may be assigned. Business operations are constantly evolving and as a result of that, job functions may also change. It is the responsibility of the HR department to keep these job descriptions updated and implement trainings as needed.…
