Marketplace Simulation Game Analysis
The marketplace simulation game was an overall great experience in terms of understanding how

an organization works, what aspects should be considered while making decisions and how to

coordinate between various departments. It was an excellent platform for me to learn how

various functional departments in an organization work and how are they dependent on one

another. Working in a team and coping with various challenges collectively helped me

understand the importance of team work. I believe that the game has helped me to develop my

management and leadership skills. Working under time and budget constraints along with

pressure from competitors have helped to improve my time management skills and improved my

strategic thinking process.

It is also very important to choose various funding sources with minimum cost of

capital in order to be competitive in the long run. We should not only run after profitability but

also manager positive cash flows every time as profits will not help us pay our bills and wages in

the short run.

In the Manufacturing department, I learnt about various key concepts such as fixed operating

capacity and operating plant capacity. One of the key decision to make in the manufacturing

department is to select the plant location. Various factors such as shipping, manufacturing and

distribution costs must be considered before choosing a plant location as it can be a source of

competitive advantage later on. I also learnt about the total capacity of the firm. It includes both

fixed and operating plant capacity which is required to control the number of units produced in

the plant. We must be very careful when selecting the fixed and operating capacity of our firm as

it can result in over production or under production of goods. I learnt other concepts like

production scheduling, target and replenishment points which is very crucial in determining the

inventory level and handling them

The goal of strategic capacity planning for Riordan Manufacturing's is to maximize the level of output and return of investment. Riordan Manufacturing's should create a small sister plant to China in Michigan. If we are able to create a scaled down version of the plastic molding machines from the China plant, the plastic polymers safety storage from this facility can become the regular shipment to the Michigan facility. By creating the Michigan mini-facility Riordan Manufacturing could shift the smaller customized fan orders manufacturing and excess polymer inventory from the Hangzhou facility. By reinvesting in the Michigan facility and the United States economy, Riordan Manufacturing will be better equipped to meet the clients demanding more from Riordan’s Pontiac, Michigan location.…

To determine the sustainable rate for output, the concept of best operating level for which the process was designed and the volume of output at which the average unit cost is minimized (Chase et al. 2006, p. 430). The most common measure for determining how close a firm is to their best operating level is to determine their capacity utilization rate. Capacity used is the rate of output achieved and the best operating level is the capacity for which the process was designed. Therefore, capacity utilization equals the capacity used divided by the best operating level. For example, if Riordan manufacturers 83 fans per week and the best operating level is 120 fans per week they are only working at a 69.2% utilization…

In order for the company to maximize on production, producing 70,000 units at Ogden and 50,000 units at Sandy will give the company a difference of $220.00 versus $270.00 at producing 75,000 at Ogden and 45,000 at Sandy. The operating leverage here shows the effects that fixed cost have on the change in operating income. Understanding the breakeven at both facilities helps to determine how allocation can occur (Datar, Schoenebeck, 2014).…

Mendel Paper Company has been doing relatively well with the sales of computer paper, napkins, place mats, and poster board. With more people eating out, the demand for napkins and place mats have increased. Computer paper and poster boards have slowly increased in demand as well. However, there is concern at the company with the fixed cost of operations. Marlene Herbert, the plant superintendent, said, “As we have automated our operation, we have experienced increases in fixed overhead and even variable overhead. And, we will have to add more equipment since it appears that we need even more plant capacity. We are operating over our normal capacity as it is.” (Case 2B). With the new production costs added in, will the Mendel Paper Company have what it takes to succeed?…

A clear strategic plan was set out in the beginning, and adhered to throughout the course of the simulation. Our overall objective was to determine the correct mix and balance of camera components, which enabled the most favorable outcome in the competitive arena. In order to offset the cost structure of the multi-feature camera, a low cost structure for the entry-level camera was implemented. This was achieved by offering a differentiated, high end multi-feature camera, offset by a low cost leader entry-level camera.…

The business gaming community seems lately to have adopted the term business simulation game instead of just gaming or just simulation. The word simulation is sometimes considered too mechanistic for educational purposes. Simulation also refers to activities where an optimum for some problem is searched for, while this is not usually the aim of an educational game. On the other hand, the word game can imply time wasting, not taking things too seriously and engaging in an exercise designed purely for fun. The concept of simulation gaming seems to offer the right combination and balance between the two.Simulation gaming is also the term that the educational gaming community has adopted.…
