Introduction
In this report I am going to carry out a PEST analysis on a UK based business. The business I have to carry out the analysis on is Marks and Spencer. I have used different procedures to carry out this PEST report on Marks and Spencer. Firstly I have used my own inside knowledge, and as well as this I have also gained some of my research from the Marks and Spencer website. (www.marksandspencer.com) from this site there is internal links to different parts of the website that contains useful information about Marks and Spencer, their values and how they operate.
As already mentioned above my chosen business I have used to base the PEST analysis report on is Marks and Spencer. Marks and Spencer is the United Kingdom’s premier clothing, food, and financial services retailer. The company’s commitment to value, service and quality was set up in 1884 by Michael Marks, when he opened a small market stall in Leeds. Then in 1894 he formed a partnership with Tom Spencer, together they opened a head office in Manchester and turned there stall in Leeds to a covered arcade that was known throughout the United Kingdom. In 1905 Tom Spencer died followed two years later by Michael marks when he passed away. In 1916 Simon Marks became chairman of Marks and Spender and in 1926 Marks and Spencer became a public company. Later that year the company began to sell textiles and in 1931 started to sell produce and canned goods. As the company grew bigger and bigger and more successful each year, when Simon Marks passed away in 1964, Israel Sieff took over the reigns as the chairman. He later introduced wine and a different variety continental foods to the company which proved to be a huge success and then in 1999 the company launched their very own website, allowing their large customer base to buy online. As of the present day the chief executive of Marks and Spencer is Stuart Rose and Marks and Spencer has more than 600 stores located throughout the UK and 240

One of their main successes has been their training programme. Another political aspect that has affected the fast food retail sector comes from international pressure groups. Environmental organizations, such as Friends of the Earth International, have proven their influence in the political systems across the world. 2 Many of the smaller fast food businesses do not have the problem of the major fast food outlets, as they do not hold as much public interest. Economical Factors 3 Socio-Cultural Factors As the smaller businesses in the fast food sector are once again not in the public eye as much as the big chains, many have not altered their menus as much. Many have lost business since the healthy living trend began, but most stick with the theory of ‘what you see is what you get’. In…
