Marketing can be defined as ‘the activity, set of institutions and processes for creating, communicating, delivering and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners and society at large’ (American Marketing Association, 2007). From this definition it can be seen that marketing is the process by which an organisation communicates with customers to promote, create a sense of value and ultimately sell their concept or product (Gamble, Gilmore, McCartnan-Quinn and Durkan, 2011). As previously stated marketing is not a singular function but a process. This process consists of a four basic elements; identifying a want or need within a market; creating a strategy to market a product to fulfil this need; delivering and communicating value to the customer; and the retaining of customers through the maintenance of this perceived value (Kotler, Brown, Burton, Deans and Armstrong, 2010, pg. 6).…

To define its future, we have to know how it evolves. Marketing, in its different contexts, has been evolved from to-market, market(ing)-to, to the stage of market(ing)-with. In this paper, the author cites American Marketing Association’s (AMA’s) definition of marketing at different stages to exemplify the development of marketing. Obviously, the main idea of this paper would be author’s definition about marketing, with its focus and attention on concept of society, collaborative process, value, and stakeholders, that “Marketing is the adaptive process, in society and organizations, of collaborating to communicate, create, provide, and sustain value for customers through exchange relationships while meeting the needs of diverse stakeholders.” According to my personal experience and background of marketing, I believe the definition has pretty much covered the whole picture as well as the core value of marketing. However, it is the three elements, value, stakeholders, and collaborative process that impress me, because I believe those would be the keys that make marketing a comprehensive system.…

Focusing on these two aspects is the essence of marketing. The plan for why, whom, how, and when 'surrounding the product, service, or idea ' all develop and stem from marketing ideas and concepts. Marketing is a process, a plan developed to identify, foresee, and satisfy customer needs and desires 'no matter the product or service, the business, or the country. Whether the market is a domestic or international venue, marketing activities are essentially the same; however, must be tailored to the unique attributes of the product and the country of target.…

Marketing is sometimes seen as a rather confusing phenomenon, drawing its theories from a disparate number of sources. The main source of confusion is the combination of marketing as a philosophy of business and marketing practice. These are two separate, yet interrelated, areas: 1 a basic way of thinking about business that focuses on customers’ needs and wants; 2 a functional area of management that uses a set of techniques. Peter Doyle (1994) explains: ‘The Marketing Concept is not a theory of marketing but a philosophy of business. It affirms that the key to meeting the objectives of stakeholders is to satisfy customers. In competitive markets this means that success goes to those firms that are best at meeting the needs of customers.’ To look at marketing as an business philosophy is to take a holistic view of the discipline.…
