Marine Biology Research Paper
Marine Biology The field of marine biology, the study of organisms within their environment of an ocean, lake, or river, has a very broad range of occupations. Marine biologists try to discover how organisms grow and develop, how they get food, how their bodies function, and how their life relations correspond to other organisms. They also use laboratory experiments to increase knowledge of human life processes. This is a great career for me to enter because there are so many opportunities to pursue my own specific interests while still having the option of working in the environment that best suits my lifestyle. The study of marine biology began as early as 1200 BC on voyages by the Phoenicians. Aristotle is considered to be the father of marine biology and was the first to record observations of marine life. Years later, Sir Charles Wyville Thomson went on a three year voyage and returned with 30,000 pages of observations; he later created the field of oceanography. He also discovered 4,717 new species on his journey. This long history of development has created the successful field of marine biology which is a major function in life today. Although marine biology is an important career, the actual job outlook is not very good. Unfortunately the supply of marine scientists exceeds the demand for experts in this field. Marine biologists are employed in aquariums, museums, colleges, and several private firms. However, government jobs are limited and job availability at these other locations is very limited and competitive. Overall, the entire field is fairly restricted because of the small demand. After college, it is customary for graduates to begin at very low levels and work their way up to a higher-ranking job.
In order to be successful in this field, a great deal of education is required. Before pushing a marine biology major, it is important that the student possesses certain qualifications. It is necessary to enjoy science, specifically chemistry

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by marine life. I visited the Baltimore Aquarium many times as a child; I remember being amazed by the different kinds of animals I saw. I spent my summers at the library reading about marine organisms, their habitats, their adaptations, and how they interacted with other organisms. In middle school, I participated in a project that consisted of decorating the classroom to represent a biome, and I worked on the marine biome. In the summer before 10th grade, I visited Sea World and was exposed to an even larger variety of marine organisms than I had been before. That fall, in English class we had to write a paper on our career goals; I decided I would like to be a marine biologist. During my senior year of high school I applied to Millersville University to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Biology, with a concentration in marine biology. Through my undergraduate studies, my interest in biological oceanography developed.…

There are numerous courses that have to be taken in order to major in Biology; while also minoring in Chemistry as well. There are introductory classes that need to be taken like: “Introductory Biology: Comparative Physiology” or “Introductory Biology: Cell and Development Biology.” Also “General Chemistry” for two semesters with “Organic Chemistry.” One semester of calculus is needed with a second semester of calculus or an equivalent of statistics. Physics is also necessary in order to complete the major of Biology; two semesters of “General Physics I and II.” And finally there needs to be Biochemistry courses taken, such as “Principles of Biochemistry, Individualized Instructions.” Majoring in Biology would grant me various skills in knowing how the world we live in is made up of and how we live as human beings on this Earth. I believe Biology is the most knowledgeable area of study because it teaches how certain things work and what they are made up of. There are numerous career opportunities in Biology, including field work and research as well. Neuroscience is an example of a career which has to do with additional emphasis on Physiology.…
