Focus Statement
An artist’s use of artistic language and expression is heavily influenced and guided by historical, sociological and cultural restraints of their environment. The complexity of the language used by an artist could be a result of social and/or cultural confines or the depth and level of cognitive involvedness presented to engage the viewer audience. Literal, symbolic and psychological images are all part of the artists language to communicate being and belonging in a globalised environment. But how do they develop such language and then communicate a message.

Through the increase of urban development, capitalism is detaching us from the psychological depths of our cognitive being in relation to nature, culture and spiritualism belonging. Technology as a part of our socio-cultural environment has created a modern audience inattentive to traditional forms of visual art. Many contemporary artists choose to use technology as a successful way to visually communicate. However, Marina Abramovic boldly uses the artist’s physical body to engage with the global audience of today’s world. As a modern audience, able to access information instantly through technology, performance art as juxtaposition creates the presents of here and now, however presents the audience with realness. In effect, the audience is paused, and the artist is able to communicate directly. Marina Abramovic then explores performance arts ability as a medium; how it can be used to understand the psychological condition of the human nature. Abramovic’s diverse philosophical beliefs of cultural spiritualism and mysticism, has played a significant part of the artist’s visual language and concept, presenting this element of the artists being to a global audience. Ulay as an important artist in the development of performance art, in collaboration with Marina Abramovic, has illustrated relationship works that have demonstrated the importance of cultural spiritualism and the relationship of the body. Marina Abromovic’s art reflects the artist being and belonging in a globalised world, the artist’s life, beliefs and experiences are transmitted to her audience.
