Marijuana History When it comes to using the drug for medical purposes, though, no one did it like the ancients. Around 2000 B.C., the Egyptians used cannabis to treat sore eyes (Webley). A millennium later, doctors in India could be found mixing the weed with milk to use as an anesthetic (Webley). In 200 B.C., the Greeks used marijuana to remedy earaches (Webley). Pot even enjoyed its freedom in America 's early days stated in the article Brief History by Kayla Webley. Now on November, 2013 the citizens of Washington and Colorado voted to legalize marijuana, and when the first of the new laws took effect on December 6, happy tokers celebrated, as quoted in the article Grass Roots by Von Drehle (Webley). Marijuana is a widely used drug, but could it benefit us in positive ways. For most of human history, marijuana has been completely legal. It’s not a recently discovered plant, nor is it a long-standing law (Whitebread). Marijuana has been illegal for less than 1% of the time that it’s been in use. Its known uses go back further than 7,000 B.C. (Whitebread). The marijuana plant, of course, has an incredible number of uses (Whitebread). The earliest known woven fabric was apparently of hemp, and over the centuries the plant was used for food, incense, cloth, rope, and much more (Whitebread). This adds to some of the confusion over its introduction in the United States, as the plant was well known from the early 1600′s, but did not reach public awareness as a recreational drug until the early 1900′s (Whitebread). America’s first marijuana law was enacted at Jamestown Colony, Virginia in 1619. It was a law ordering all farmers to grow hemp stated by Charles Whitebread in the reading The History of the Non-Medical Use of Drugs in the United States. In the 1700s Hemp was the primary crop grown by George Washington at Mount Vernon, and a secondary crop grown by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello

Cannabis, better know as Marijuana, has been around since 2900 B.C. A Chinese Emperor Fu His, referenced the plant as being, “a popular medicine that possessed both yin and yang.”(ProCon.org) In America, the use of Marijuana and the concept of it has been kicked around and jumbled for hundreds of years. It has been generalized and put in a box. Beginning with George Washington, he grew Marijuana on his private plantation for thirty years. In the early 1900’s states began outlawing the herb, starting with Massachusetts in 1911. Ironically, the first arrest ever made for possession of Marijuana was in Colorado. Today, Colorado along with Washington has legalized the recreational use of Cannabis. In 1970, Marijuana was labeled as a schedule one drug that had “no accepted medical use.” In 2013, that myth has been thoroughly shot down as propaganda as we can see by the uprising in Medicinal Marijuana Dispensaries across the country. However, some people still believe the plant is a harmful and a dangerous drug. It is one of the oldest, and most effective natural medicines in human existence. Marijuana does not affect everybody the same way.…

Throughout history, marijuana “has been used for medicinal purposes all over the world” (Online Pot Organization, 2008). The oldest recorded use of marijuana was about 5000 years ago in China. “In the Chinese culture, one of the earliest uses of hemp was for “absentmindedness”” (Online Pot Organization, 2008). Other cultures used marijuana for pain, anxiety, hilarity, menstrual cycle induction (in women), and to make clothing and paper. Furthermore, “ancient Iranian literature implies that the hemp plant was used as an oil source” (Online Pot Organization, 2008). Marijuana is truly a substance that is versatile and useful in a number of ways.…

Marijuana has actually been legal for most of human history. It was only in the 1930s that wide-spread prohibition took place. Marijuana was outlawed on the basis of several claims: It was believed to make people violent, it encouraged white women to engage in sexual relations with black men, and was used by paedophiles to draw children in. No scientific evidence or testing was provided to back up these claims.…

Concerns on the drug are understandable; many people fear that marijuana can lead to the use and abuse of harder drugs such as heroin and cocaine. “Marijuana is far less addictive and far less subject to abuse than many drugs now used as muscle relaxants, hypnotics and analgesics”(Lester Grinspoon, MD and James B. Bakalar, JD). Medical marijuana should not be considered as a drug but more like a healing herb. Marijuana isn’t even a drug, it’s a plant. Therapeutic use of marijuana has a history spanning over 4,500 years. Around 2700 B.C., in Egypt, marijuana (cannabis sativa) was used as a treatment for sore eyes; the Greeks used cannabis as a remedy to treat inflammation earache and edema (Teresa Odle and Clare Hanrahan). Even today, clinical studies have shown that marijuana is effective against relieving nausea and vomiting following chemotherapy treatments for cancer. The herb has also been…

In America today, marijuana is the most commonly used illegal drug. The name marijuana is a Mexican slang word, which became popular in the 1930’s, which refers to the medicinal parts of the cannabis plant. Marijuana is a green, brown, or gray mixture that is created through drying the leaves and flowering tops of the cannabis plant. Some of the more popular street names are weed, pot, herb, grass, Mary Jane, boom, gangster, and chronic. One question that has haunted Americans for a long time is “Should the use of marijuana be legalized?” Some say, “Yes”, while others say, “No”. Marijuana has been vilified in America over the past 70+ years. Despite its many practical uses, medicinal and industrial, our Federal government insists on maintaining the status quo that the growth, possession and use of marijuana is criminal despite the evidence that the legalization of marijuana would have a positive influence on America. In this paper I will discuss the history of marijuana, the industrial uses of hemp, the prohibition of marijuana, the economic impact prohibition has on America, the effects of marijuana use on the mind and the body, marijuana for medical use, and how legalization of marijuana would have a positive influence on America. Although I support the legalization of marijuana I do not support the legalization of other Schedule I drugs, therefore this paper is not about the legalization of all drugs.…
