Marie Luu's Beautiful Creatures
Legend, written by Marie Lu, is a dystopian sci-fi novel for young adults. It is the first book in an epic trilogy that is continued in Prodigy and Champion. Based on a retelling of Les Miserables, Legend is “impossible to put down and even harder to forget” (Kami Garcia, author of Beautiful Creatures).

Set in a futuristic Los Angeles, Legend is told from the perspective of two main characters from contrasting backgrounds, June and Day. In this novel, the United States of America no longer exists, but has been replaced by two warring nations, the Republic and the Colonies.
A trial is hosted each year in the Republic to determine who joins the army in fighting the Colonies. June Iparis, born into an elite family and “groomed for success

However everything is not what it seems. Day insists that he did not kill June’s brother, and after taking a closer look at the photos of Metias’s corpse, June realises that there were actually two knife wounds – one in the shoulder where Day claimed to have hit him, and another in his chest. Who, then, could have murdered Metias? And what other ulterior motives could they have?

My favourite part of the book is when June hacks into the Republic’s database and finds Day’s real Trial scores, also a perfect 1500/1500. This is when she realises for sure that something is off with the Republican government. It throws a really big wrench in the whole plot and makes it all the more exciting to read.

The author of Legend, Marie Lu, was born in Wuxi, China in 1984. She had moved to the United States by the age of 5 with her family and currently lives in Los Angeles, California. The inspiration for Legend came one afternoon while Marie was watching Les Miserables, and wondered how the relationship between a notorious criminal and a famous detective might be portrayed in a more modern setting.

I highly recommend this book to young adult readers, as it combines some very interesting themes and ideas to create an absolutely amazing dystopian novel, full of exciting plot twists and

Inkheart ~ by Cornelia Funke “Dare to read aloud?” These words made absolutely no sense to me when I first read the back of this book. I would soon learn later on in the book that a man named ‘Mo’ had an almost unknown power of speech… I had judged the book by the back, I had no idea what to expect when I first started reading this book. I had misjudged the book, I thought this book was going to be bland and dry, but I judged the book by the first 30 pages. I have really never read chapter books that much other than now.…

Ingrid and I share a strong passion for reading. Her idol is Sherlock Holmes and she has read his entire book collection, but I on the other hand haven’t read any of his books. Also, as she has been locked in a home I have been locked out… many times. And that’s pretty much the only thing we have in common because her sheer braveness and instinct are very unique to find in a person so young. I was so intrigued by this book that I found it impossible to put down. I literally finished it in a few hours. This book is a good read for any one who likes action, suspense, mystery, or just a plain good…

I’m a reader, I love to read. I have a saying that I like to quip to the ladies and gents that work at library: “Too many books . . . and not enough time.” This book definitely qualifies. I think it should be required reading in our high schools. Some of our kids, mine included,…

I recommend this outstanding book to grade 6 and above. Mainly because there are some inappropriate words in the book which isn’t a severe word you’ll see adult use or even high school kids when they are talking with their friends. This is a mystery/suspense book with lots of surprises happens throughout the book like in the second book, Luke wants a fake Id and gets it however the population police comes but doesn’t get caught which you won’t understand because he never does any bad action. There is also sadness like in the first book; Jen gets shot at president’s house which was also a surprise. If you’re grade 6 and above and love mystery/suspense and sadness then it’s a great choice to read these book.…

I would recommend this novel to an individual who is interested in a book that involves mystery, death and love. I recommend this novel to one of my friends, who likes a book with lots of depth, complicity and secrecy at the same time but yet it all comes together eventually. This specific individual is interested in novel’s that keeps her guessing and constantly on her toes. Another good reason why I would recommend this novel to this specific person is because her favourite author is Margaret Atwood. This individual would love this novel, because there’s so much in this novel that remains unsaid, so much that stays between the lines. She likes novels that play with your mind and make you think. She would love how one story leads to another but yet they’re connected to each other some how. She also likes how Margaret Atwood’s novels are more work then a typical book. Another reason why I would recommend this novel to my friend is because, she likes novels that are like puzzles, there are multiple pieces to the stories and once put together they make sense. But I also believe that anyone should read this novel, it’s intriguing and right when you think your confused and done with the book, it grabs you back in again with another twist. Even the title makes you interested in the novel, because you wonder what it’s about and why it’s called The Blind Assassin.…
