Not only did Margery endure rebuke to gain God’s approval, but she was able to give up her marriage and all physical sexual indulgences. Margery and her husband, John, had a comfortable and loving marriage. Occasionally, John gave Margery advice in terms of calming her ostentatious and “proud” manner, in which she often responded sharply to, but he never seemed to be angry with her, just aggravated. He always stood with Margery no matter the ridicule that she received, which is an important quality in a life partner. This relationship was one of the only stabilities in Margery’s earthly life. But, Margery gave her relationship up, at least up until she would care for John in his old age. She made this sacrifice to become closer to God and to understand Jesus’ suffering. Becoming chaste, avoiding all sexual temptations, and eventually leaving John, were Margery’s ways of making God her primary concern. In leaving the earthly concerns of marriage, sex, and love, Margery strengthens her relationship with God and Jesus. Jesus spoke to Margery in one of her visions, he said, “therefore I must be intimate with you, and lie in your bed with you. Daughter, you greatly desire to see me.” To many modern-day Christians, this idea might sound unconventional, or even disrespectful, but this for Margery was a way to express her complete devotion to Christ. She has rejected all earthly sexual pleasures and given herself fully to God. To make this idea of their union official Jesus takes Margery as his “wedded wife, for fairer, for fouler, for richer, for poorer, provided that you are humble and meek in doing what I command you to do.” Again, in order to reach this spiritual bond, she had to abandon one of the only allies that she had in her
