Margaret Thatcher Historical Leadership
Margaret Thatcher, Iconic Leader in History
(King, 2002)Chellee Nemec

Abstract
There are too few iconic women leaders in history when in which female leaders of today can aspire to. While the numbers are small the women that did make their mark in history are notable leaders for women of today to emulate. After learning more about her life, Margaret Thatcher may very well be the most influential female leader of our time. No other female leader and many men for that matter have been able to accomplish what she did in her lifetime. She is definitely a leader to admire, learn from and aspire to be like. She has a no-nonsense approach to politics, a quality that I believe is missing in great leaders of today.
Margaret Thatcher, Iconic Leader in History
Thatcherism
Thatcherism encompasses the leadership style, political conviction, economic and social policy of British Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Margaret was known for her stern approach to leadership. In my research I have identified three types of leadership that exemplify Margaret’s abilities as a leader: trait, transactional, and transformational.
Early on in her political career she exemplified the trait leadership style because she had the notion that some were inherently born with leadership traits like her father was. The documentary The Making of Margaret Thatcher, the narrator says, “Her father Alderman Alfred Roberts fostered her early interest in politics. He was the mayor of Grantham and was involved a great deal in local public life. He took Margaret with him on public duties. He saw her as carrying on his tradition.” (Wiedmann, 2008). In her early years of leadership, Margaret manifested all of the trait theory leadership characteristics that she saw in her father. She was intelligent being an oxford graduate. She was self-confident, determined, lead with integrity and was sociable.
While most people would categorize Margaret Thatcher as a transformational leader, an evaluation

In 1997 it is fair to say that the Labour party was desperate after being out of power for fifteen years. But there was hope. A relatively new face had emerged to become the leader of New Labour. In an era when political parties are run like organisations and rely on numbers and strong leaders, Tony Blair filled his party with excitement and anticipation. He went on to lead the party to a landslide victory in the general election after a campaign that focused significantly on his personality. Inevitably, Tony Blair was idolised by his party for this achievement. However this wasn't the first time in British Politics that the emphasis was placed so strongly on an individual.…

Margaret Thatcher, otherwise known as The Iron Lady, was known for her role in saving Britain. The economy of Britain was facing tremendous troubles in the nineteen hundreds (Blundell 92). If the economy of Britain continued down the road it was going, Britain would have faced many great economic hardships that Margaret Thatcher prevented during her time in office. A leader is someone who inspires people, who can be clutch as a forerunner to get started on a way of thinking; or sometimes a leader is the fearless one who steps in a place no one has dared to and when they do, they do so without remorse. A leader doesn’t look back at what has passed, but instead looks ahead at what’s to come. A leader is honest, caring and has integrity. A leader confronts challenges and does not let the voice of haters or malicious people bring them down. A great leader, not just a leader can do all of these things and when they are pushed down they can get back up and keep going like no one has touched them. A leader, who fits this description in my eyes, is Sarah Palin.…

Every leader throughout history has effected the world in some way. Regardless if it was positive or negative, short-term or long-term, they did have an impact. The greatest leaders are remembered throughout history and the rest of time. The worst leaders are the ones who are completely forgotten, or worse, remembered for all time as the leader who messed up. There are different opinions as to what really makes a great leader, but something that they all have in common is their ability to do what they think needs to be done no matter what. Great leaders listen to advice, but they stick to difficult decisions regardless of the opinions and threats of others. This is what Marie Antoinette did. She remained dignified throughout her entire reign. She decreased costs of the palace when France was in financial crisis. She adopted orphaned children and paid for poorer children's education. She reached out to everyone she could. Even when she was all alone she still tried to do what she thought was right, despite the French revolution and the death upon her.…

There are often figureheads in history that garner intense prominence and distinction from their peers, not solely due to their policies or political leanings, but rather, for their disposition and everlasting influence; Reagan and Thatcher, two controversial yet legendary Western political powerhouses of the 1980’s, perfectly define this prestige. Margaret Thatcher’s eulogy to Ronald Reagan, written from the view of a close friend and not just as a diplomat, pulled at the heartstrings of not just Americans, but the whole globe, in 2004 to commemorate one of her closest companions and his unprecedented stratagems as the 40th President of the United States. In this sentimental and sincere eulogy, Thatcher recounts the achievements of Reagan’s…

Many people believe that leadership is simply being the first, biggest or most powerful. In January 2007, J. Lee Whittington presented the lecture on “Leadership legacy”, at a video tutoring session at University of Dallas. Leadership is an intentional influence. A leader is interpreted as someone who sets direction in an effort and influences people to follow that direction. Leadership is the ability to successfully integrate and maximize available resources for achieving organizational or societal goals. There are different styles of leadership but great leadership depends on vision, motive, and involvement of people in decision making process.…

Ever since he swept to power in 1997, Tony Blair’s unique dominance over his party and indeed, the UK’s political scene, has attracted comparisons with a ‘presidential’ figure. Inevitably, the president most often cited is the American one. This note seeks to analyse: the origin of this debate about the increased importance of the British Prime Minister; the impact of Thatcher and Blair on the debate; and why the arguments in favour of there being a British Presidency might possibly be persuasive.…
