Marcom Tactics for Gatorade G2
INTRODUCTION
The US sports drinks market is highly competitive. It accounts for the highest worldwide sports drink consumption. A sports drink is a deviation of an energy drink which aims at rehydration, sports performance and muscle recovery. The major players in this US market are Gatorade by PepsiCo & PowerAde by Coca-Cola.
Gatorade
Gatorade is accepted as the market leader of US sports drink market with nearly 75% market share as at 2008 (Sports Business Daily, 23 July 2009). The study analyses the marketing mix of Gatorade in US market with special concentration on its Marketing Communications. It was introduced in 1965 as a thirst quencher by four medical researchers at University of Florida. The name for the drink came from ‘The Gators’, the first team who used the drink to achieve success. It was acquired by Quaker Oats Company and became a part of PepsiCo in 1998.

GATORADE G2
Gatorade Company launched Gatorade G2 in 2007 as a low-calorie electrolyte beverage. The product is considered as a healthy choice beverage by athletes and became the highest grossing food product in USA in 2008 with sales of $159.1 million (Advertising Age, 25 March 2009). The target market for G2 can be defined as; * They are active and athletic (Professional or Non-professional) * They aim fast rehydration on and off the field * They are health conscious, concerned about the sugar content of the product.
It can be identified that G2 is aiming for a rapidly developing market as US consumers are increasingly becoming health conscious and is becoming serious about physical training & fitness.

MARKETING MIX
PRODUCT
Gatorade G2 is a low calorie electrolyte beverage which is packed with vitamins. The product entered a rapid growth stage in 2008. In response to the entrance of PowerAde Zero, the vitamin-packed, healthy beverage in to the sports drinks market in late 2008, some augmentations were introduced to G2 in 2009, which includes; * New

    In terms of Product, Gatorade was the first sports drink ever, thus they created the sports drink market. The drink was developed in 1965 in response to problems within the University of Florida’s football team (History of Gatorade, Retrieved December 2, 2006). The players were not performing up to their full ability even if they wanted to. Their bodies just were not able to keep up. Thus, in the lab, Gatorade was created. The original flavoring was added to cover the taste of all the electrolytes and other nutrients that were in the drink (History of Gatorade, Retrieved December 2, 2006). Since then, Gatorade has grown into the leader of the sports drink market with 85% market share (Fuhrman, 23). Now, Gatorade comes in numerous different flavors allowing more selection, and drawing in more customers. There are many different Gatorade product lines such as Gatorade Rain, Fierce, Extreme, Endurance for hard core athletes who need the competitive edge and even a line of flavored water called Propel. The slogan on their website says “For every thirst, there is a flavor” indicating the amount of variety Gatorade now offers, even beyond what is mentioned here (www.gatorade.com).     Since the creation of Gatorade in 1987 sports drinks have become a staple of American athletics. Every major sports league, including the NBA, NHL, MLB, NFL and NASCAR, are sponsored by and use of Gatorade Thirst Quencher. All Sport and Powerade, two other smaller market sports drinks, have limited sponsorships of smaller sports leagues including the NCAA.     Gatorade started in the summer of 1965 with the realization that the Florida Gators football players could not make it through practice without struggling. Many players reported being dehydrated and playing sluggish during team drills. So team physicians got together and determined what exactly was the problem. The athletes suffered from a lack of electrolytes and carbohydrates, which was not being replenished with just water. The group of four physicians blended a drink that had the perfect balance of carbohydrates and electrolytes. The drink would prove to help the Gator football team perform better on the field, so naturally they called the drink “Gatorade.” What happened next was rather remarkable because the players started performing better. They finished with a record of 7-4 that season and the next season they finished with a record of 9-2, winning the Orange Bowl for the first time in school history. Eventually, the drink moved into the professional leagues and the first team to adopt it was the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs had trouble practicing in the stifling heat of Missouri’s summer afternoons and they kept it on the sidelines the whole year. It resulted in the Chiefs beating the heavily favored Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl VI. Soon it became popular to have Gatorade on the sidelines and it started the sports drink category. By 1985, Gatorade had expanded its research in sports science by building the Gatorade Sports Science Institute.
