In the middle of the school year we had a parade that our band had to march in. It was something that I had never done before, so I was a little bit apprehensive about doing it. Dear Principle Spencer, Associate Principal Lee, and Athletic Director Fry: You do so much for this school. The goal of success for all students is incredibly apparent through your actions. It is obvious that the football team is amazing, and so are the other sports. They all put forth hard work, and earn their greatness. But you are neglecting a major part of home football games: the marching band. The Turpin Marching Band is one of, if not the biggest team in the school, with 150 members. These people train just as hard as the football team. I can tell you with experience, with how many times I’ve pushed a heavy synth cart through the mud, or up the hill to the stadium like King Sisyphus’ boulder in the underworld. I’ve marched so hard I…

A few years after World War 2, the music genre Rock N’ Roll was created. It originated from Rhythm and Blues and Country. In the early 1950’s there was three musicians that joined the world of Rock N’ Roll. Their names were Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley. They each had their own style of Rock N’ Roll. But some individuals couldn’t decide who the true king of Rock N’ Roll was. To me, American roots music is the broad range of genres of music originated from people such as the Native Americans. Different styles of music come from different types of groups of people based on things like morals, traditions and customs, and religion. For example, some Native American tribes have songs to welcome back fighters from battles because they believe that it will calm the soul and mind from the gruesomeness of battles. These songs and traditions will start within one tribe or group of people and will most likely spread to other similar groups of people in the area. It then becomes a widely known genre of music to many people and becomes the “roots” of those people from the originating area. Different genres have many different “roots” such as Country music comes from the south or the Blues which is believed to have originated from the enslaved people from Africa. In some instances, it is difficult to pin point the origin of a certain genre because in most cases, some types of music are created from other types of music with their own unique styles added to it.…

Participating on the Sutton High School cross country team has been one of the most rewarding yet stressful experiences of my life. For the past five years the Sutton cross country team has been a second home to me and season after season I return thirsting to vanquish a competitive fire. Although I'm ecstatic about competing this year, I was not always this happy about running. Five years ago I decided to try out for a sports team that involved less hand eye coordination (seeing how I have none) and tried out for the cross country team at my school. Almost immediately did I find out that a simple task like running could become much more strenuous not only on my legs and lungs but on the mind. While my body adjusts to the challenges of dirt…

“Music is Good for the Soul”, that is what one is able to express when imagining the melodic words or sounds arranged to create what Merriam-Webster (n.d), defines as a structured beauty, harmony, and a means to express an emotion. Such emotion can be found in blues and gospel music. Identified in early times, blues and gospel music has been considered the anchor of many genres of music and the hope of African American’s during their times of oppression.…

If I am not at school, I usually am either at band practice, exercising, or working. During marching band season, band takes up the vast majority of my time and it takes up even more due to the fact that I am part of the drumline. Our school has the drumline participate in various events around the school causing me to dedicate even more time to band. Once marching band season ends and concert season begins, I begin to dedicate more time towards working and less time towards band. This makes it so that throughout the majority of the school year I do not have much leisure time at all. However every day I do some form of exercising, either running or lifting weights. Recently, I have been preparing to run a half marathon sometime in January.…
