Homework 2.1.2.0

1. In addition to clay minerals, what other soil constituents contribute to total CEC?

The Organic Matter present in the soil.

2. How does CEC buffer nutrient concentration in soil solution?

CEC will exchange ions continuously between the solution concentration until both of the concentration has neutralized.

3. Why does anion adsorption appear to be of little importance in most agricultural soils? Why are AECs of ultisols usually greater than those of mollisols?

CEC has a much larger impact for most agricultural soils. AEC occurs on the edges on minerals where positive charges are found.AEC is found particularly in highly weathered soils of the tropics and subtropics. Most agricultural soils have too high a pH for AEC to occur, which increases as pH in soils decreases, especially in the US and Canada. But the AEC in agricultural soil are smaller than CEC so they are repelled by the positive charge on soil. Ultisols have a lower pH than mollisols so AEC occurs more frequently in the ultisols because they occur more abundant in lower soil pH.

4. With what type of soil would the ammonium acetate method provide a good estimate of CEC? On what types would it provide a poor estimate? Explain why.

A soil that has a high base saturation (%BS), pH of 7, a 1:1 clay material, and high Organic Matter (OM). All of these provide a larger number of exchangeable cations available for the soil. Any soil differentiating from these will provide only a lower number exchangeable

    Farewell to Manzanar

On December 7, 1941 there was a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii by Japan. The attack came from the Japanese, yet it caused unfounded fear in this country toward Japanese Americans. The book Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James D. Houston depicts the reactions of the government and the American public toward Japanese Americans after the attack on Pearl Harbor. So why were they the ones punished for it? We still see examples of inaccurate assumptions, hypocrisy, and discrimination during this time in our nation’s history that can be related to our own community since we continue to categorize, generalize and overreact.…

Count, Capture, Play and Think: Mancala and Math We have all had the experience of playing board games. They are the staple of family game nights and inside recesses. Board games have been around in various forms throughout history and one of the oldest is the family of count and capture games known under the umbrella term of Mancala, which is an Arabic word meaning "to move". This game can, of course be played for fun, but it can also be used in its different forms to teach simple math and strategy (University of Waterloo 2010). Mancala can be traced back to ancient Egypt in the 15th or 11th century BC.…

Phosphorus is an essential macro-nutrient for plant growth and sustainable soil management. Phosphorus nutrition can be challenging in acidic soils (e.g. Queensland) and alkaline soils (e.g. South Australia). To achieve sufficient nutrition, the soil needs to have a relatively high pH, high organic matter content, and moist conditions. Specific soil orders such as Vertosols, Kandosols, Sodosols, Rudosols, and Calcarosols, lack the requirements for phosphorus nutrition. The availability of phosphorus heavily relies on soil pH; the pH range for highest availability is between 5.5 and 7.0, whereas, Queensland and South Australia are both out of this range.…

In this website, it talks about what methods are used to play Mancala. The writer stresses that planning and strategic techniques are key to master the game. Some of the strategies used in this website, we have also used in our presentation. One strategy we used in our presentation was capturing. To capture your opponent 's pebbles shows that the person is beginning to stash pebbles and is planning ahead. Also, if you choose a pit with a lot of pebbles chances are you may be able to make it all the way around the board and capture pebbles. This strategy was useful to the topic because it showed how a player could advance in the game and defeat their opponent.…

The Fruitvale branch of Manzana Insurance is struggling right now. “Branch profitability was declining. The backlog policies had increases since 1989, and the number of new policies and endorsements appeared to be stagnating.” To make matters even worse their main competitor, Golden Gate, had no problem taking business away from Manzana while they were struggling. Exhibit 1 shows some of the key metrics for Manzana the past two years and for Golden Gate this year. This shows just how bad of shape Manzana-Fruitvale is in right now. Their renewals are decreasing and they have an extremely high renewals late number (44%). This has led to a very high renewal loss rate (47%) while Golden Gate’s is at just 15%. Even though renewals are the least profitable program for them, losing half of your current business each year is a major problem. Something has to be done to fix this. The current practice at Manzana was to do the new policies (RUNs and RAPs) first. These represented the highest value to the company and employee but doing this has greatly hurt the renewals (RERUNS). When employees get to work in the morning they sift through their work pile for RUNs and RAPs to do first. This practice was not considered company policy but it seems the underwriters were encouraged to do it. In the end, giving priority to new policies pushed renewals to the back of the line and is the main reason that Manzana is seeing ever increasing late and lost renewals. If the company wants the employees to focus on the more profitable new policies they must understand that renewals are going to suffer. Although renewals do not present the same initial value of new policies, losing renewals still represents a significant loss of business.…

    Australian Soil

Hence climate is the main soil forming factor that could possibly make any distinguishable characteristic change to soil properties between the regions. Climate, as both temperature and rainfall, has major effects on organic matter, chemical composition, base saturation and contents of carbonates and soluble salts (Young, 1976). The tropics of Australia consistently experience warmer annual temperatures. Warm temperatures coupled with high moisture, will increase the rate of reactions in the soil and therefore increases the weathering process (Stonestrom, et.al., 1998). Therefore in the wet tropics, it is typical to have well-developed, highly weathered soils. The shorter the dry season the higher the percentages of clay, although this effect is frequently masked by the stronger influence of parent material (Mohr, et.al., 1972). The silt: clay ratio tends to decrease with an increased rainfall (Mohr, et.al., 1972). Soils of rainforest climates are frequently high in clay and very low in silt under slower chemical weathering of while in semi-desert and desert soils much material remains as sand or silt particles (Young, 1976). The problem here is that the tropical belt of Australia does not have one consistent type of vegetation or consistent rainfall throughout, and hence not one consistent soil…
