Manila Chamber Singers
Michael S. Veruasa BSCS 3 Logic

Practice makes perfect. The Manila Chamber Singers rehearsed prior to the formal presentation to make certain they’ll satisfy the crowd and satisfaction is an understatement—it was an amazing performance that will leave an indelible mark on my inner artistic self.
When the first song was showcased—our national anthem, I knew right there and then that I got more than what I paid for. I couldn’t remember the last time that the LupangHinirang gave me goosebumps.
They introduced four spiritual songs and I thought their repertoire was limited to this genre. I took notes on vocal dynamics since I encountered it on “Hallelujah”. I also jotted one particular song—KommtIhrG’Spielen since for me singing is hard while singing good is harder but singing a german song that good? The ensemble never ceases to amaze me. On top of that, they also did some cultural songs from local regions of our country (i.eKruhay from Panay island)
I took some videos since I am eager to show my musician friends the Manila Chamber Singers experience. This doesn’t happen every day, so why not capture the moment?
It got more entertaining when they did popular songs that even youngsters knew. Of all the songs from their set lists, Overdrive and Moonriver belong to my favorites. Overdrive has a cool bass line and Moonriver has a nice chord progression, imagine my joy when I heard these from them. But the real surprise of the evening was when they did the medley. They got the crowd with all sorts of dancing, acts etc. I thought these type of performers were too conservative, kudos for breaking boundaries and spicing it up.
I was totally impressed by the event to the point that I caught myself practicing those do-re-mis

In this concerto, I felt that all singers had the ability to have the audience feel comfortable as they sang. Jaz and Phillip’s performance of “La’ci darem la mano”, from Don Giovanni by Mozart, was very nice because as they sang together they interacted with one another or sang to each other while at the same time not forgetting that they had an audience in front of them. Another piece composed by a member of the ARC orchestra by the name of Alia Martin is called Cogitation. I felt this piece could be in a movie. I really liked the parts the piano and flutes had in this. I loved how the piece grew bigger in sound and momentum in the end. I noticed that the violins played softly and there was a super high note coming from a flute in the orchestra which was beautiful. My most favorite performance of the night came from Betty Karamatova playing the piano. She played the Piano Concerto No. 2 by Rachmaninoff. This is another performer who moves along with her instrument. Her movement reflects the music she is playing. She gave it her all. She really put emphasis on the keys when she needed to and just went for it and lost herself for us to feel what the music or the message of the piece was about. It was awesome that she could do that and for me as an audience member feel that without there being words in the piece.…

Almost every night the people whistle and chant to the music that is starting to play at the large arena. The initiation starts with a loud thundering drum. The trumpet joins with the core melody with the great high pitched voices. The projection and the distinctiveness of the Spanish voices make it unique. The first words are only to inject fun and dance. Once the singers step the first step to the dance, all the brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments whirl together. The sharp upbeats leap the body to move its joints. Both genres of music have two ways of sound: they delight the ear with tremendous rhythm, but as the night flows, their passive, sweet melodies join soul mates. The sounds that pass through Mexico makes us live so vividly and happy. Despite the sounds of the instruments, the auditory the lyrics make is special. Most lyrics are inspirational music. The voice unit the people through words, experiences, and advice. From lost wars in the past to independence, to rising and falling or even to love songs, it engages the public’s…

The first song was titled “Fanfare for Saint Cecilia.” This piece was composed for Saint Cecilia on a special occasion called “Three Countries Day.” This is an example like we talked about in class where a composer had a job of composing music for a certain event because prerecorded music wasn’t available at that time. The song had a magnificent and triumphant feel to it with many brass heavy parts specifically trumpet. Woodwinds played the accompaniment underneath but were not heard exclusively. Some parts I liked about this piece was the overall excitement that it had and the energy that the ensemble put into it. It was very easy to tell that the instrumentalists enjoyed playing the song.…

This concert was a bit less formal than any of the others. The choir members still wore their usual formal garments, whilst carrying sheet music in the recognizable black folders. The thing that stood out most was the allowance of the audience to join the choirs onstage and stand in their seats to be a part of the choirs angelic sound for just a few moments.…

The performance started out with the musicians entering the room one by one as they played and opening song, and settling down in their positions. I really enjoyed the movement and the energy they brought with them into the room because it seemed to wake most of the audience up, as some had been waiting for a while. One of my favorite sounds to hear within the music was that of the tuba, which provided the bassline heartbeat. It…

I feel that the thirty eight performers that performed in the first piece which was Mozart’s Symphony No.40 in G minor did an exceptional job. They had perfect rhythm and pitch throughout the whole song. The outcome of having perfect pitch produced a beautiful melody. This song was rich with texture. I also am impressed with the fact that the conductor Louis Langrée conducted this piece from memory without using any sheet music. This is a perfect…

What really pleased me about this performance was the large organ. I have never seen such a musical instrument like that one before in person. The performance was very loud, but the music they played was soothing. It was pleasing to me that they played instruments other than the organ. They also played an oboe, which is part of the woodwinds instrument family, and the trumpet, which is part of the brass instrument family. All of the musicians were very talented, and you could tell they have been producing and practicing music for many years. I liked how the performers made smooth transitions and that each song break was short.…

As a music performer, I once had a chance to perform in a Hong Kong artist, Aaron Kowk’s concert. The manager and other staff from Mr. Kowk’s team were devoted to reveal the most charming parts of Mr. Kwok to his fans and audiences. When I saw the smiles on the staff’s faces, I admired them from the bottom of my heart. Since then, I have had many chances to work as a volunteer for some public relations agents and helped to hold event, such as local concerts for both local and…

Last February 16, we were required to watch Art in Action: Dance Series which features the Brazilian School of Capoeira (EBC). The program contains lectures and actual performances by students from the university and guest artists. Some of the lectures given were the following; Introduction to music, benefits of music to the artist and audience, elements of music and intoduction of different filipino ethnic instruments. The program also featured different kinds of dances like ; Philippine Northern Dances, Mindanao Dances, Classical Ballet, Swing, Modern Dances, Streetdance and Capoiera. Even though a lot of types were mentioned, I saw that the program focused mostly on dances from our country. The program still focused on how vibrant our culture is and how it changed over time. Honestly, my perception of philippine dances changed after watching this show because I saw how beautiful and creative those dances were. This program really made me appreciate more our culture. I'm now confident in saying that I learned a lot from this program, not just from our culture but also about dance as general. I learned that dance is really a form of art because it also requires creative skills which are also needed when painting or in arts and crafts. However, the highlight of the show were the featured guests from The Brazilian School of Capoeira (EBC). Members of EBC performed and they surely left the audience in awe. They were kind enough to give a "free class" when they asked volunteers from the audience to come and join them onstage. All in all, the show was very fun and educational. I learned a lot of things about dance which changed the way I saw dance before. I really recommend that everyone should watch them perform. It's worth watching and everyone will surely have a good…
