ETHICS ASSIGNMENT
POINT OF VIEW OF VARIOUS STAKEHOLDERS IN NIYAMGIRI –VEDANTA CONTOVERSY

As a Union Minister, Industries (India):
Odisha is one of the poor states of India due to lack of development initiatives. In order to alleviate poverty in the state we need to utilize our natural resource and promote industrialization in the state.
Niyamgiri mining resource have attracted Vedanta towards our state and they can bring a lot of investment which can generate employment and contribute significantly towards the growth.
At the same time I need to make sure that setting of factory brings inclusive sustainable growth which would help in development of the area. I also need to take care that environmental issues are addressed properly by Vedanta
It should be my duty to bring both sides on the same level as far as information flow is concerned. Instead of looking at the two players as hostiles, it is the role of the government, policymakers and thinkers to throw up creative ideas that help bridge this gap.

As A CEO of Vedanta:
We will make sure that not only we are benefitted from the Niyamgiri project but it also helps in development of the area. The Niyamgiri tribes are one of the most under developed area of the country .If we are allowed to set up in the area we will make sure that tribal people also develop and get better standards of living. Talking to the villagers and learning how they economically and socially benefitted would have also led the Niyamgiri to accept Vedanta with a more open mind.
I need to understand the niyamgiri tribal culture, their way of thinking and need to get their outlook towards the issue compatible with the goals of the organization.
We have already set up primary schools and primary healthcare Centre in the area .This will help in changing the mindset of the community and also help in raising the standard of living in long term
The company will contribute 5% of its PBIT from this project to the development of

First of all we need to remember that NREGA is a programme without precedent. No other employment programme has even come close to being implemented on such a large scale. So the output can’t be compared to that of any other programmes. Taking into account the success story of the Pandurni village in the Nanded district of Maharastra which won the award for the best performance in implementing the Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme for 2009-2010, we can see that around 1500 people from the village are registered under this scheme from which around 800 have been benifited from it. Pandurni has completed over 100 irrigation projects. Of these projects one that has been remarkable is the rocky bund built by around 200 villagers, to prevent soil erosion. Officials claim that implementation of the scheme on such a large scale here has prevented the migration of labourers to other districts. Similar success stories have also been reported from various villages of Rajasthan.…

It seems that the efforts to exploit the natural resources have seemingly gained impetus after Chattisghar was separated as a state. The new state government has entered into private agreements with big names such as Tata and Essar to setup steel plants on state leased land. Essar has set a up pipeline that transports 8 hundred million tonnes of iron-ore slurry per annum to the port of Vishakhapatnam, while National Mining Development Corporation (NMDC) has already begun in the Nagarnar village of Bastar, in spite of the local outcry. In response to this outcry the government attempted suppress it, and erect more projects all around Bastar. A sponge iron factory came up in Raikot that emitted thick black smoke into the…

The first thing we did in our community was to identify the problems in our area. Then, we prioritized and ranked them. The highest is sanitation family planning so we focused our heath teaching on those two. Majority of the families we interviewed have three to five children without proper birth spacing. Based on our survey, we came to realized that most of them are not aware of the different family planning methods. We did a research on the different contraceptives and made leaflets that shows them the different methods. For sanitation we bought broomsticks, sacks and rugs. We also bought groceries for prizes. We also prepare sandwich and juice for them. We coordinate with the officials in the barangay hall for the sound system, chairs and for the security of everybody including us. We went to the association president and ask her help for the invitation and we gave out some invitations to the families in our community including the families we didn’t interviewed.…

India is endowed with vast natural resources like oil, gas, coal, iron ore, gypsum, diamonds, uranium etc. There is no doubt that if these natural resources are exploited in full, India can become one of the developed countries of the world. The Indian experts, whom we lose every year, can stay on in India and help in the development and exploitation of natural resources. Even those experts who have already settled in foreign countries could be lured back to India so that they can help India to become a great power in the world.…
