Part A
In every business organization, compensation or reward is an important issue and is identified to be a motivating factor, for employees to perform well and contribute effectively to the organization’s growth and for the attainment to whatever goal the organization has. One of the organizations that needed to have a good reward system is the construction industry. This is because the construction industry is composed of various workers: engineers, architects, electricians, technicians, foremen and labourers who are usually required to work even on holidays and weekends because construction projects have a definite time-frame and should be finished as demanded by the client and the weather. Aside from that, construction workers are exposed to accidents, injuries and hazards, thus reward system in this industry should be carefully given attention.

Haohe Construction China Ltd is a private owned Chinese company that specialized in providing engineering construction services such as general contracting, planning, design, mechanical & electrical installation and project management. The elements of the reward system in Haohe include both the extrinsic and intrinsic rewards: compensation, benefits, work importance, social interaction and work variety.

In Haohe, extrinsic rewards are very important to be able for employees to meet their needs and to support their life. Compensation involves wages and bonuses while benefits include insurances and premiums that can be received in particular instances. Wages and benefits are the direct financial rewards. These are more important than the other elements of the reward because money helps meet the basic material needs; increases purchasing power of employees; raise the standard of living; and solve immediate financial problems (Ofili, 2004). The low wage prevalent in the industry is the reason behind the shortage of skilled workers and the

    Construction sites are dangerous, and many accidents can occur. Each day on a work site, construction workers are subject to many tasks and pieces of equipment that can put their lives in danger. Workers are asked to work with heavy equipment and powered vehicles, such as forklifts (Powered vehicles), cranes and other heavy duty equipment, (OSHA, 2010). With all of the activities that occur on a construction site, accidents due to falls are the number one threat to construction workers on a work site, (OSHA, 2010). The U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) states that falls are the number one cause of construction injuries and deaths, (OSHA, 2010). Falls are the leading cause of deaths in the construction workplace. From 1995 to 1999 with an average of 362 fatal falls occurred; this trend is on the rise, (OSHA, 2010). OSHA states that it is important that safety and health programs have steps or measures to protect construction workers from falls on sites. Most fall-related injuries occur from unprotected side walls, wall openings, floor holes, not using scaffolding correctly, unguarded protruding rebar and not using ladders correctly, (OSHA, 2010). Falls from a height or from an elevation will count towards one third of all deaths in construction. Majority of construction work is conducted above ground, several stories in the air.     Traditional rewards such as money or cash bonuses need little explanation. This type of reward and compensation system is still the most commonly used in the work force today. As a result, employees have come to expect this type of compensation. Therefore, it is usually the starting point of negotiations when a person is considering several opportunities. Employers understand how to execute this system but many do not understand when to execute this system to maximize effectiveness. A study conducted by Accountemps suggests that financial executives (CFOs) prefer cash bonuses to non-monetary rewards. "Forty-three per cent of (CFOs) cited bonuses as the most effective way to acknowledge a job well done." (Cash Still King: Bonuses Best Reward After Major Projects, CFOs Surveyed Say) Non-monetary rewards came in 2nd and 3rd when used for rewards after major projects. However, the survey does not show how an employer can retain good employees when the budget does not allow for a cash bonus or the employer wants to say thank you for completing a routine task.
