Question 1

How has the implementation of NAFTA affected Walmart’s success in Mexico?

The North American Free Trade created in 1994 affected Wal -Mart`s success in Mexico in three specific ways. Wal-Mart had a marketing campaign where it offered “Every Day Low Prices”, but this was not quite true in Mexico because it had significant import charges on many of the products brought from the U.S. After the implementation of NAFTA, Mexico became a free trade zone. This made it possible for Wal- Mart to reduce its tariff from 10% to 3 %. This led the government to solve the logistical problem due to the fact that Mexico`s transportation system was below average. NAFTA encourages Mexico to improve the transportation system, which lowers the logistical cost. Additionally, NAFTA allows foreign investment in Mexico. As a result, Wal-Mart was able to build manufacturing plants in Mexico because of the cheap labor. In this particular case we can observe how low labor cost contributes to obtain low import tariffs therefore leads to cheaper products. Wal-Mart`s success in Mexico was definitely possible because of the NAFTA implementation.

Question 2

How much of Walmart’s success is due to NAFTA, and how much is due to Walmart,s inherent competitive strategy? In other words, could any other U.S retailer have the same success in Mexico post-NAFTE, or is Walmart a special case?

    Because of NAFTA and excellent trading relations with the U.S., Mexico's Gross Domestic Product has risen 5.5 percent per year for the last five years. When Mexico experienced the peso crisis, it rebounded quickly, from an $18.5 billion deficit in 1994 to a $7.1 billion surplus in 1995. The unemployment rate is down in Mexico as well as in the U.S. Mexico's urban unemployment rate is less than four percent, after having risen from six percent in 1992 to 8.5 percent in 1995. Manufacturing, construction, transportation, and communications through NAFTA connections have been leading Mexico through its tremendous success. Mexico's exports however, are the greatest factor in this booming period.     I choose NAFTA as my topic because most people have strong opinions as to how NAFTA has affected the economy and whether it has had major significance on the job market. I figured that I would provide NAFTA’s advantages and disadvantages and provide my opinion. NAFTA has had some advantages, for example NAFTA created the world’s largest free trade area, linking about 440 million people and producing $17 trillion in goods and services annually, trade between the NAFTA signatories, form $297 billon in 1993 to almost one trillion in 2007. Mexico is the top export destination for beef, rice, soybean meal, corn sweeteners, apples and beans Mexico is the second largest producer of corn, soybeans and oils. As a result of NAFTA the percentage of U.S agricultural exports to Canada and Mexico has grown from about 22% in 1993 to about 30% in 2007. NAFTA has increased trade services, including financial services and health care items as these items aren’t as easily transported as are goods, so being able to expand services to nearby countries is important.
