Thinking, Fast and Slow

For the last decade or so a band of scholars has been trying to cast off the long-accepted “rational agent” theory of economic behavior, the one that says that people, in their economic lives, behave like calculating robots, making rational decisions when they buy a stock, take out a mortgage, or go to the track. These scholars have offered a trove of evidence that people, far from being the rational agents of textbook lore, are often inconsistent, emotional, and biased. Perhaps tellingly, the pioneers of this field were not economists. Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky were Israeli psychologists who noticed that real people often do not make decisions as economists say they do. Tversky died in 1996; six years later, Kahneman won the Nobel Prize for economics.
Thinking, Fast and Slow, Kahneman’s new and most accessible book, contains much that is familiar to those who have followed this debate within the world of economics, but it also has a lot to say about how we think, react, and reach—rather, jump to—conclusions in all spheres. What most interests Kahneman are the predictable ways that errors of judgment occur. Synthesizing decades of his research, as well as that of colleagues, Kahneman lays out architecture of human decision-making—a map of the mind that resembles a finely tuned machine with, alas, some notable trapdoors and faulty wiring.
Behaviorists, Kahneman included, have been cataloging people’s systematic mistakes and nonlogical patterns for years. A few of the examples he cites: 1.Framing. Test subjects are more likely to opt for surgery if told that the “survival” rate is 90 percent, rather than that the mortality rate is 10 percent. 2. The sunk-cost fallacy. People seek to avoid feelings of regret; thus, they invest more money and time in a project with dubious results rather than give it up and admit they were wrong. 3. Loss aversion.     Every day we are faced with decisions. The quality of them often determines the pattern of our lives. There’s the question: “How to make the best decision?” Although the majority of people are used to saying that decisions should be based on the long-term gathering of information, comparing moral and ethics rules and human prejudices and bias, Malcolm Gladwell offers another point of view in his best-seller, in 2005, “Blink: The Power of Thinking without Thinking”. The book explains a decision-making process, namely the value of the first two seconds of an action. In other words, an importance of rapid cognition – the kind of thinking that happens in a blink on an eye (http://suite101.com, n.d.). Initially, the readers may consider that the book is about intuition. Indeed, the word intuition is not suitable to “Blink” because intuition describes emotional reactions, gut feelings. Thus thoughts and solutions do not seem entirely rational. That’s why people in Kazakhstan should ponder deeply before relying on intuition. According to Gladwell’s definition, “Rapid cognition is just a process of thinking that goes faster and operates a little more mysteriously than the kind of deliberate, conscious decision-making that we usually associate with “thinking”… what goes on in these first two seconds is perfectly rational.” (www.gladwell.com/blink, n.d.).     Are we rational, as most economists claim, in our daily monetary transactions? Do we truly understand and carefully evaluate the real value before every economic decision? As the book titled: Predictably Irrational, the author, Dan Ariely, argues that people’s economic behaviors are rather irrational, yet predictable through psychological explanation. He experienced third-degree burns when he was a teenager. The treatment for this unfortunate event took up much of his social life in the next three years, and eventually made him feel “partially separated from society and as a consequence started to observe the very activities that were once my daily routine as if I were an outsider” (Ariely, 2008, p. xiii). Ariely is now a successful behavioral economist with doctorate degrees in psychology and business administration. He now shares his knowledge through his book, Predictably Irrational, in which he discusses people’s economic behaviors in psychological terms and reminds us our weaknesses, moreover, provides advices to prevent our future irrational decisions.…

    The article touches on unsophisticated decision making tools and techniques. I think it is important to look at some of these examples and understand why they may even be used at all. Some of these practices include: flipping a coin; enee, meenie, minee, mo; and other popular methods like simply picking a number. (Sikula & Sikula, 2008) The truly shocking part is that people rely on these methods with more frequency than one would presume. Sikula & Sikula (2008) go on to elaborate on how people are “immobilized” by difficult decisions. “They procrastinate indefinitely, do nothing, and let the chips fall where they may.” I can relate to this observation as I, as I’m sure most have witnessed it first-hand and may have even participated in from time to time. One of the most dangerous decision making methods, is to rely on the past. Things in life are bound to change, it’s inevitable.     The film “How to Make Better Decisions” was quite interesting. The beginning of the film highlighted how based on science, it shows that the decisions we make are bad. We assume that we have a strong awareness of our choices and the reason why we do certain things. I agree with that because every time I make a decision, I always think that I know what the outcome would be, but really I am only making a decision based on my emotions and I am only assuming to think the outcome will be great. When I was in high school, there was a pair of sneakers that I really wanted. These sneakers were about $100 and my mother thought I was crazy for wanting them. At that time in my life, I convinced myself that I should buy these sneakers because they were cute and I really wanted them. Looking back now, that was a very bad decision. I could have saved that money and used it for something else. The only reason why I wanted those shoes was simply because everyone in school wanted them, but only certain students could afford them. It was like I had to prove something by buying those shoes, and I did not make a logical decision when purchasing them, I acted out on emotions. At that time in my life, my “grip on reality” was not as tight as I thought.…
