Educational Administration and Supervision

Part 1

1. It is important for school administrator to be fully aware of the theories and concepts of organization and management. Identify and discuss dominant theories and concepts from the classical to the contemporary approaches. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of each approach and the applicability and effectiveness of each major theory to the school setting.

2. Discuss the difference between management and administration. What are the roles and management skills does an effective manager need?

Let me first define management and administration, according to Webster Administration is defined as the activity of a government or state in the exercise of its powers and duties, while management is the process of dealing with or controlling things or people. Given this definitions, i can say that Administration connotes government and non – profit organizations, while management connotes business. Administration is an art while management is a science. Administration’s function is to formulate policies while Management has the executor functions. Administration is more on values and general while management is more on specific and factual. Administration is more on strategic level while Management is more on Tactical level.

For the roles of a manager, we can divide it into 3. First is the Interpersonal Roles where there are 3 functions. The first function is the figurehead role where the manager must accomplish his or her ceremonial duties. The second function is the leader role where the manager is responsible for the work of the people of that unit. The last function is the liaison role where the manager makes contact outside his or her vertical chain of command.
