All officials served at the pleasure of the Lords Proprietors or the Crown. During the proprietary period, the council was comprised of appointed persons who were to look after the proprietors' interests in the new world. The council served as an advisory group to the governor during the proprietary and royal periods, as well as serving as the upper house of the legislature when the assembly was in session. When vacancies occurred in colonial offices or on the council, the governor was authorized to carry out all mandates of the proprietors, and could make a temporary appointment until the vacancy was filled by proprietary or royal commission. One member of the council was chosen as president of the group, and many council members were also colonial officials. If a governor or deputy governor was unable to carry on as chief executive because of illness, death, resignation, or absence from the colony, the president of the council became the chief executive and exercised all powers of the governor until the governor returned or a new governor was…

First of all, independence was only possible upon Singapore’s rejection of the Malaysian policies. When Malaysia had forced upon its own national polices, economic and political approach on Singapore, the fissures of relations started to appear. Singapore goods taxed highly despite the common market understanding between the two countries. Kuala Lumpur was also reluctant to grant the pioneer certificates as promised since very few were drafted. Moreover, the Federal Government even wanted Singapore to increase its contribution from 40% that they agreed on, to 60%. All of these were further compounded by the closing of the Bank of China. This made Singapore unhappy because the bank provided trade and this would affect the trade between China and Singapore, crippling Singapore’s economy and affecting industrialization, whereas only making Malaysia attractive to Foreign Investors. The interests of Singapore were not well represented by Malaysia. Bound by the unfair policies between the two countries, Singapore would not be able to achieve progress with…

Malaysia and Singapore shares a special relationship mainly due to geographical proximity and historical linkage. It reached to a lower ebb in the 1960’s when it was termed to be a ‘Cats and Dogs relationship’ by the then Malaysian Prime Minister. The ultimate result was a separation to create an Independent Singapore. Since Singapore’s separation from Malaysia in August 1965, both countries have experienced many highs and lows over the last 47 years. The past and ongoing differences include water issue, Pedra Branca (Pulau Batu Putih) claim, Malayan Railway (KTM) land and CIQ at Tanjung Pagar, land reclamation at Tuas and Pulau Tekong, Central Provident Fund (CPF) withdrawals by Malaysians, Malaysian airspace violation by RSAF planes and replacement of the Johor Causeway etc. Some observers have compared this relationship with that of a divorced couple.…

As the only ruling monarchy in Southeast Asia, the Sultanate of Brunei is often seen as a political anachronism in a region in which democratic institutions of government prevail. Independence, gained from Britain in 1984, did not result in the institution of representative government, but in effect led to the consolidation of the monarchical system of government (Singh 1988: 67). Its present head of state, Sultan Sir Hassanal Bolkiah, is the 29th ruler of a dynasty which has reigned in Brunei since the fourteenth century. The early Brunei Empire reached its zenith from the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries, when it exercised suzerainty over much of Borneo and the southern tip of the Philippine archipelago. Under the fifth Sultan, Bolkiah (1473-1521), Brunei was especially powerful and even managed to briefly capture Manila.2 Its territorial domain and influence was gradually whittled down through the centuries, and it has been suggested that if not for British colonial intervention, the Sultanate would be lost to oblivion (Horton 1984). In 1839, the English adventurer, James Brooke, arrived in Borneo and gained control over territory in northwest Borneo as a reward for putting down a rebellion in Sarawak. Brooke, who styled himself “Rajah” of Sarawak, soon expanded his territorial control. Soon after, in 1878, on the northeast coast of Borneo, the British North Borneo Company established a foothold and was similarly encroaching on territory tenuously held by the Brunei Sultanate. The arrival of western powers in the region affected the traditional trading patterns and decimated the economic base of the Sultanate. Brunei became a British Protectorate state in 1888, and had the British not established a residency in 1906, it is very likely that…
