Malathion an Organ Osphate Insecticide
Week Two

SCI/275
Assignment: Risk Assessment
Due Date: 02/12/2011
Instructor: Dr. Jensen

Malathion is an organophosphate insecticide; it is used to control certain insect population like boll weevil, med fly ,and mosquitoes. Applications of malathion has been used on the ground or sprayed in the air when trying to get rid on adult mosquitoes associated with West Nile Virus. (ATSDR 2001). When using malathion by ground or spraying the EPA says it has a relatively low toxicity to humans, other mammals and birds when comparing the chemical to other organophosphate insecticides.(EPA2000 ab) However because of the danger it imposes on aquatic organisms direct application to bodies of water is avoided. There are four important factors one should take inconsideration before using malathion as a solution to the mosquitoes’ and West Nile Virus problem. Hazard identification: The chemical Malathion does have negative side effects for humans and eco system. Dose-response: Depending on the amount of Malathion ingested the symptoms can vary from mild to moderate or severe poisoning, results can be life threatening. Exposure: Water pH level over 5 percent causes negative effects to aquatic animals, and plants.
Malathion degrades rapidly in the environment when used by spraying or ground applications.
Risk characterization: The ATSDR has developed several risk levels concerning the gestation of malathion. Testing done on humans and animals with an uncertainty factor used, to determine what level of contamination is a risk.
Using these proposed values for the risk assessments for public health mosquito uses, EPA
(2000d) concluded that the risk estimates for adults and toddlers for combined dermal and
Inhalation exposure did not exceed EPA’s levels of concern for residential bystander inhalation and dermal exposure from truck fogger and aerial ULV mosquito-control applications. This assessment included

pH is a measurement of how acidic or basic a solution is. Water with pH lower than 7 is considered acidic and higher than 7 is known as basic. The safe levels of pH in drinking water is 6.5 - 8.5. Pure water has a pH of 7 which means there is an equilibrium of positive hydrogen ions and negative hydroxide ions. ((When the pH of water is below 6.5, the water is soft and corrosive. This type of water can damage metal pipes and when used, it can stain clothes, have a sour taste and damage sinks. Water with a Ph greater than 8.5 is considered hard. This water does not pose a health risk, but can stain dishes and utensils))4. When Ph of water is low there can be many consequences and effects. ((Even a moderate decrease in pH of water could affect the fish…

    Pesticide Penetration

The state of the chemical, i.e., solid, liquid, or gas, affects the chances of pesticide penetration into the body. Liquids or gasses can get into the body through all three routes, whereas solids tend to have a lower chance of entry through the lungs. However, if solid particles are small enough or if they remain on the skin long enough, penetration into the body can take place in the same ways to those of liquids or gasses. The most common route by which pesticide users are poisoned is absorption through the skin. Dermal absorption may occur as a result of splashes and spills when mixing, loading or disposing of pesticides. To a minor degree, it may result from exposure to large amounts of residue. The degree of hazard by dermal absorption…

Currently before the Genericville city council is a proposed pesticide application program to reduce the mosquito population. The current pesticide of choice for this is Malathion. While there are many different viewpoints on the effects of the pesticide Malathion, it is my decision as a city council member to vote for the usage of Malathion as part of the pesticide application program. Included in my vote is the condition that extensive educational efforts are given to the public, notice of when and where the pesticide will be applied, and its potential risk and hazards be given to the citizens of Genericville.…

Summary Too many house-flies are coming into people’s homes during the summer when they have their doors and windows open. This is a problem for the people living in these homes as house-flies carry diseases that they transmit onto food around the home. We need to come up with a solution that decreases the number of house-flies coming into the home while allowing people to keep their doors open. After considering numerous ideas I concluded that the best way to do this is via a eugenol based fly spray.…

Malathion shows little cause of increased likelihood to adverse health effects. Compared to other organophosphate insecticides Malathion has relatively low toxicity to humans, other mammals, and birds, which is why Malathion is the preferred method used to kill mosquitoes and prevent West Nile Virus (Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry, 2007). All the residents will be informed of the dates of application as well as the rate of exposure they will encounter should they go into the areas of direct application. Residents will also be informed to try to stay out of the areas of application for at least a week and to not touch anything that may have Malathion applied to it.…

Organophosphorus insecticides • Organophosphorus insecticides are normally esters, amides, or thiol derivatives of phosphoric, phosphonic, phosphorothioic, or phosphonothioic acids. Most are only slightly soluble in water and have a high oil-to-water partition coefficient and low vapor pressure. • Organophosphates - are commonly used for small animals as flea and tick powders, sprays, foggers, shampoos and dips, flea collars, and formerly, as systemic insecticides.…
