“The Youth is the Hope of the Mother Land!” that’s what Dr. Jose Rizal, the Philippines’ national hero said to his countrymen. He believed that it depends on the youth what our world will be in the future. But do you think it make sense today? The youth is the future leaders of our mother land, but on the contrary, why some youth become a problem of our society? They were hooked in drug addiction, prostitution, teenage pregnancy, bad fraternities and sororities, among others. What is happening to them? The youth must do their desired responsibilities—to become a good son or daughters of their families, to study harder, to become a low-abiding citizen, to be involved in environmental issues, and other social and political advocacies, and among others. With regards to youth involvement in social advocacy, the volunteerism program being promoted by the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) is one of the examples that a youth should be active with. We all know that Red Cross helps less fortunate people in the time of calamities and disasters or even in several simple emergency cases. Know what they say about Red Cross volunteers—they are the so-called “living heroes of our time.” So, if you will join an organization like this, you will be included also to the flock of living heroes. That’s the rational place that the youth should spend more time to experience the real meaning of life—a life that consists of more challenge and meaning. Some of the famous personalities of the PNRC who really promote the spirit of volunteerism were Ms. Rosa Rosal, who became a Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for community service; and Hon. Dante Liban, former congressman of Quezon City and now serving as governor of PNRC-Quezon City Chapter. Like them, the youth must imitate their undying support and dedication in the name of service to humanity and country. All of us must understand that being a youth comes only in a while. We must live life to the fullest and make the best out of it. So, don’t waste your time in a nonsense things and daily routines. Be a good example to everybody. Let’s prove to the world that the youth really makes a difference. Let’s empower ourselves by rekindling the spirit of volunteerism and be a true hope of our Mother Land.
