Kurt Wiesenfeld is a physicist who teaches at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. He wrote this essay for the “My Turn” column of the June 17, 1996, issue of Newsweek.

It was a rookie error. After 10 years I should have known better, but I went to my office the day after final grades were posted. There was a tentative knock on the door. “Professor Wiesenfeld? I took your Physics 2121 class? I flunked it? I wonder if there’s anything I can do to improve my grade?” I thought: “Why are you asking me? Isn’t it too late to worry about it? Do you dislike making declarative statements?”

After the student gave his tale of woe and left, the phone rang. “I got a D in your class. Is there any way you can change it to ‘Incomplete’?” Then the e-mail assault began: “I’m shy about coming in to talk to you, but I’m not shy about asking for a better grade. Anyway, it’s worth a try.” The next day I had three phone messages from students asking me to call them. I didn’t.

Time was, when you received a grade, that was it. You might groan and moan, but you accepted it is the outcome of your efforts or lack thereof (and, yes, sometimes a tough grader). In the last few years, however, some students have developed a disgruntled-consumer approach. If they don’t like their grade, they go to the “return” counter to trade it in for something better.

(4) What alarms me is their indifference toward grades as an indication of personal effort and performance. Many, when pressed about why they think they deserve a better grade, admit they don’t deserve one but would like one anyway. Having been raised on gold stars for effort and smiley faces for self-esteem, they’ve learned that they can get by without hard work and real talent if they can talk the professor into giving them a break.     Even though, I didn't know where any of my classrooms were. Lets fast-forward a bit. I did not do well in 3 of my classes. I later failed them. The next semester there was this program for students that failed a course or courses last semester. I was in that program and it was called "study skills" even though we didn't do any studying.     The high level of students allowed to graduate despite their poor performance is atrocious. In Mary Sherry’s essay, “In Praise of the F Word” she states, “tens of thousands of 18-year-olds will graduate this year and be handed meaningless diplomas.” (Sherry 564) Further, in Sherry’s essay she discusses the need for teachers and parents to instill a healthy fear of failure in these kids. If a child truly cannot complete the required schoolwork at an acceptable level, the educational system should fail the child. It is just the right thing to do. Graduating students who have not done strong work in school is unfair to the students themselves and it cheats the future employers of these students.     Singleton identifies several factors which result in our poor education system and due to an unstable grading system, students have become more reliant on a teacher’s leniency with grades rather than mastering the material being taught.     In “Thinking as a Hobby”, William believes that most people are grade three thinkers. Grade three thinkers tend to feel, and not to think. Golding gives an example of his teacher Mr. Houghton, who would always talk about “good life, sexless, and free of duty”, while “his neck would turn of itself” if a girl passed by the window (164). I think he is right; most people will speak or do without speaking. For example, William says in his essay, “A crowd of grade-three thinkers, all shouting the same thing, all warming their hands at the fire of their own prejudices, will not thank you for pointing out the contradictions in their beliefs” (165). I have known of people speaking their minds, and not caring if it hurts the other person. To be a grade-three thinker is to live the unexpected life. One particular individual that he describes in this passage is a school teacher by the name of Miss Parson. He feels that Miss Parson pretended to care, and to be concerned for her class. Actually, the only concern she had was finding her a husband. To me, grade three thinkers are considered immature and selfish. When you try to reason with them, they either respond one of two ways, they get mad and turn it into a shouting match or they get defensive. I thought William did a good job on describing grade three thinkers, because it describes most people. People only care about themselves, and not how it may affect others.
