Making Connections Easy: Analysis of Three Short Stories to Understand the Impact of Decisions
MAKING CONNECTIONS ESSAY

BY: VIVEK CHANDRA TUTOR: TAMA

The decisions that anyone may undergo should always be thought out before attempting. We ever know what type of casualties may occur from a choice that takes effect in an instance. Decisions that we make have consequences good or bad is the theme that I have chosen to explore. I am giving evidence of this theme in short stories "On the Sidewalk Bleeding" (written by Evan Hunter) and "Stand on a Cloud" (written by Phil Kawana), also the film "Shark Tale" (directed by Vicky Jenson) and the song lyric's "Bad Decision" (by Trey Songz).

The theme "decisions that we make have consequences good or bad" is presented in the text "On the Sidewalk Bleeding" written by Evan Hunter. At the beginning of the short story the character is described as being 16 years old and as being a member of a gang "THE ROYALS" "The Royals had chosen him" this quotation shows how Andy had made the decision joining a gang. The consequence to this decision is when Andy is stabbed by a rival gang member from the "Guardians" as Andy is stabbed the rival gang member shouts " that's for you Royal" this shows how Andy as an individual is not targeted but his gang "THE ROYALS" is stereotypically targeted. Andy's decision to join the gang has caused Andy to be attacked and the consequence of that is having his life short from him "I haven't live life yet", Andy's life that he wanted was to spend with his girlfriend Laura which he can't now as a consquence. This is similar to the text "Stand on a Cloud" because in both there is a decision both characters make, that causes an outcome of violence and conflict, when in " Stand on a Cloud" the character Tau has a consequence the leaves him with violence filled anger that is unleashed on his family. The differences between these two texts are that the character Andy is a 16 year old American and the character Tau is a 30 year old Maori. I think that Andy is stereotypically targeted when he was stabbed

The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant by W. D. Wetherell, and Lamb to the Slaughter by Ronald Dahl display a theme of acting on impulse. This relates to our lives in many ways, In our everyday lives many things trigger us to act on impulse; when our parents chose to fight with us, we tend to ‘snap’ back, not thinking about how our actions could affect us in the long run. These stories share the theme of ‘acting on impulse’, even though they have different characters, settings, and events.…

Being a part of a gang meant to have pride, at least that is what Andy presumes. Andy, a member of the Royals, a notorious street gang, has been stabbed in an alley by a rival gang, the Guardians. Despite this act in Evan Hunter’s “On the Sidewalk, Bleeding”, Andy proves he is not frightened at the thought of death. Instead is only filled with an overwhelming sadness that his life is coming to a short end. Throughout the novel, Andy shows himself as a hopeless, regretful, loving and depressed person through his acts, making him ultimately a complex individual.…

“Novels and stories are renderings of life; they can not only keep us company, but admonish us, point us in new directions, or give us courage to stay a given course.” (Robert Coles). We as humans, all love a good story; whether we are watching a movie, listening to our favorite song, reading a novel or having someone tell us a story, there is always a sense of enjoyment. Stories are all around us and we can trace stories and the act of storytelling back to our early ancestors. "All the individuals of the same species, and the species of the same genus, or even higher, are descended from common parents;" stated by Charles Darwin in Origin of Species, his take on stories was take even though the story may change as humans evolve, they all start with an origin. Looking through the lens of literary Darwinism stories can be a metaphor towards the theory of evolution.…

Prejudice and our blind eye towards prejudice within our society are evident factors in the story “On the Sidewalk Bleeding” by Evan Hunter. The main character, Andy, because of his gang membership, is pre judged based on his jacket and not for who he actually is. As a society, we do not notice the injustice within our culture. Prejudice, an underlying and unseen inequality made the difference between life and death for Andy. Andy could have been saved numerous times from after he was stabbed but the reaction he faced from the people who could have saved him was a heart breaking experience for the reader.…

In everyone’s lives, there comes a time when a person must make a choice. And, every choice, good or bad, has a consequence. It is evident from Amir and Baba’s actions that decisions have both, positive and negative repercussions. If someone wants to get a point across to a wide audience they must appeal to people’s emotions, logic, or show them that they are credible. In the book The Other Wes Moore the author tries to show his readers that any decision made could change a life in a positive or negative way. Throughout his book, Wes Moore compares the lives of two boys with the same name, growing up at the same time, both in bad neighborhoods. He examines these young men and tries to show when and why their lives changed for better and worse. People cannot choose their living conditions or who their parents are, but Wes Moore shows how the decisions made today can change a person’s future for better or worse. For his audience, use of pathos is the best way for the author Wes Moore to inspire his readers to listen to his purpose of this story and make a change in their lives. To further support his book the author appeals to the audience’s ethos and logos but they are minor in comparison to his appeal to pathos.…

One’s final moments often leave many questions. “What will my final thoughts be?” or “What would my final statement to the world be?” Reflections on death are often avoided because death can be terrifying but, if forced to think about it, what would you do in the final moments of your life? The author of An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, Ambrose Bierce, wants the reader to focus on his or her final moments and how they might unfold. The author is able to make the reader feel as though he or she is actually sharing the protagonist, Peyton’s, terrifying experience and provokes reaction and deep feeling. The plot is intriguing, unique and takes the reader on an emotional rollercoaster. By using character development, the author is able to make the main character personable and relatable. Additionally, the setting and it’s description, pulls the reader into the text and transports him/her to Peyton’s world. The author hooks the reader with these elements and ultimately forces him or her to reflect on his/her last moments of life.…

Growing up my parents would have been proud of me graduating high school alone. Since I knew that’s all they really cared about at the moment, I never gave myself a true thought on what I wanted to do or become because I was just focused on graduating and nothing else. My second year of high school is when I was told by my counselor Mrs. Davenport that I should join clubs because it would look better on my application and resume for college. College was something that I never really discussed with anyone because no one in my family talked about ever going, yet I had a feeling that Mrs. Davenport knew what she was talking about. I then decided that since I’m doing track and can handle school, why not try an academic club out. There were so many clubs I could join, but I did not know what which club I would belong to. I honestly just choice one that I thought would be a smart…

Single storying is when someone puts one thing they know about you or they think they know about you has your entire persona. When people do this they are looking at you with a limited viewpoint. Single storying someone is hurtful because it is putting someone in a box based on limited information. Although single storying someone is unethical it is easy to accidentally do it without thinking. Most people in their life have been single storied and have single storied someone at some time, probably without even realizing it.…

Throughout our lives there are many obstacles we have to face, some may shape us and some may scar us years onward. My story is a common one that countless people have faced that got in the form of disguise that isn’t always pretty. In life, everyone is destined to make decisions, whether it is as inconsequential as picking out an outfit or it is as life changing as deciding where to go to college. While making these decisions, the most unexpected influences can help with guidance towards the right direction and make everything seem clear. These influences can be something small, like someone saying a sentence, or something big, like a political crisis in the world. This is shown in the short stories, “Initiation”, “Divergent Paths”, and “Harrison Bergeron”. In “Divergent Paths” and “Harrison Bergeron”, the major influence was a large group of people with authority. However, in “Initiation”, only a stranger on a bus influenced the main character.…

    The Power of Storytelling

People have been telling stories, writing poems, and drawing and painting pictures for others since the beginning of man. Since then many things have changed, and I will focus on three of these differences today. To start, I will discuss the differences between the views people had on hierarchy in the time of the Brothers Grimm, compared to the views the author of “Sir Patrick Spens” had. The next topic is the difference of middle class attitudes towards women found in some of the Grimm’s tales, compared to the attitudes today. Finally, the third topic of this essay will discuss the similarities and differences of the way men were viewed in the Grimm’s tales and the same aspect toward men today. The role of a woman in society today has almost been turned completely around compared to the views when the Selected Tales were written. As well, it is clear that the media has created these idolized figures that a woman should be tall and beautiful and a man should be big and strong. However, this idea of a man being big and strong was not always the case, which is the most noticeable difference between the time of the Grimm’s fairy tales and now. The reason for this essay is to bring attention to the change we have seen over the many years since the Brothers Grimm wrote their stories.…
