Maintaining a Healthy Body
Maintaining A Healthy Body

There are a wide range of factors that affect the health of the body. The nutrition of the body is one. The Government recommends that all healthy individuals’ diet should contain plenty of starchy foods such as rice and pasta. Plenty of fruit and vegetables, at least 5 portions a day. Moderate amounts of protein-rich foods such as meat and fish. Moderate amounts of milk and dairy. Little saturated fatty foods, such as salt and sugar (1). Another factor that works along with nutrition is exercise. The United Kingdom (UK) chief medical officers recommend that adults should be doing moderate intensity physical activity of 150 minutes a week (2). As well as ways of increasing health there are factors that can decrease it. Cigarette smoke contains over 4,800 chemicals, 69 of which are known to cause cancer (3). This surely can not be good for maintaining a healthy body. An access of alcohol is another substance that affects the human body’s health in a negative way. We will look at each factor in more detail to show how much each factor can increase and decrease a persons well being.

It is important to choose a variety of foods everyday to maintain a healthy body however you have to eat the right foods not just a variety (4). This is known as a balanced diet. Starchy foods such as bread, rice and pasta should make up about a third of the food you eat, according to the National Health Sector (NHS). Starchy foods are a good source of energy and the main source of nutrients in our diet (6). Starch is made up of a complex carbohydrate and also glucose in a more complex form (7). This will provide the body with energy to function both mentally and physically (6). Excess of starch however can cause problems. As starchy foods are higher in calories and have high sugar content, this can lead to weight gain and possible health risks such as diabetes or hyperglycaemia (7).

One important argument for the harmful effects of western diets and lifestyle is that they have negative effects on people’s physical health. First of all, the consumption of high-fat food, sugary desserts and drinks and red meat causes diseases. For example, after examining over 28,000 middle-aged women for 10 years, researchers find that the risk of developing high blood pressure is about 25 percent higher, comparing those who have red meat less than once every day with those who eat no red meat at all (Nutrition Action Health Letter 2008, p. 9). Moreover, according to Bray and Popkin (1998, p. 1171), when people have very-low-fat food they seldom have obesity and when people take more fat, they are more likely to become overweight. Secondly, less exercise, sedentary lifestyle and other bad habits make people unhealthy. For instance, according to Emerson (2005,p.141), there is clear evidence that low levels of physical exercise could lead to high risk of gaining cardiovascular disease, some cancers and type2 diabetes . Additionally, smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol result in…
