Joy Harjo has always been conscious of her gift by stating, “I was entrusted with carrying voices, songs, and stories to grow and release into the world, to be of assistance and inspiration. These were my responsibility” (Harjo 20). In her memoir Crazy Brave, Joy Harjo uses vivid memories, poetry, and dreams to portray her struggles and growth into the strong successful woman she is today. The book starts in her early childhood when she discovers her connection to music and the spiritual world. The sections “East “ and “North” of her memoir contain crucial moments that have molded Joy’s life while on a mission to find her sense of identity. Joy seems to struggle with her identity in much of the first two sections; these struggles with identity come from her gender, race, and family life. While her struggles make a significant impact on the person she is today, the way in which she overcame these struggles is what molds her character and view on life. Joy Harjo found refuge during adolescence in books, music, and poetry, which eventually saved her life. Pivotal moments in Harjo’s life are depicted in the sections “East” and “North” in Crazy Brave, that have impacted her developing sense of identity and her growing desire for independence.…

Charles Spurgen Johnson was the son of Charles Henry Johnson a Baptiste minister. They were pretty much lucky to be a little more upper class .Charles Spurgen witnessed a lynching at twelve years of age from intoxicated white men. He watched how his father stood alone brave and didn’t feel threatened he was a role model for his son as well as many other African American. This line stood out to me from the reading “Muse” “Johnson thus grew up with both a deep hatred of racial injustice and an understanding of the limits of individuals bravery in confronting it”. This part stood out to me because most African Americans weren’t brave enough to stand up for there right the they feel they were beneath these people. As far as his son…

However, in one location, the Confederacy, there has been more of it than anytime else in US history. Slavery was legal there for centuries, and after it became illegal, discrimination stayed and the Jim Crow laws, along with the KKK, arose. Jenna Fox is one of the characters I found interesting in the novel ‘The Adoration of Jenna Fox’ by Mary Pearson. The novel is written in first person narrative, which helps reveal Jenna’s thoughts, hopes, fears, and dreams. Another technique that Pearson used to help expose Jenna’s personality is character relationships, which helps the reader to learn more about Jenna from another point of view. A third way that the author made Jenna interesting to me was by making Jenna the same age as the target audience, which helps the readers and I to sympathise with her. Collectively, these techniques help to make Jenna interesting to me.…
