Macbeth: Act 3
1 a/ Macbeth: Whose execution takes your enemy off, Grapples you to the heart and loves of us, who wear our heath but sickly in his life (3.1.104-106) b/ I will tell you a plan that will get rid of your enemy and bring you closer to me. As long as Banquo lives, I am sick. c/ First quote; no comparison yet, Macbeth is convincing the murderers to kill Banquo
2a/ Macbeth: Both with eye and tongue: unsafe the while that we Must lave our honors in these flattering streams, And make our faces vizards to our hearts, (3.2.31-34) b/ Talk to him and look at him in a way that will make him feel important. We’re in a dangerous situation, where we have to flatter him and hide our true feelings. c/ Macbeth is speaking to Lady Macbeth and is telling her how she must flatter and be nice to Banquo to hide her true intentions for murdering him.
3a/ Lady Macbeth: Pronounce it for me, sir, to all our friends, For my heart speaks they are welcome.(3.4.7-8) b/ Say welcome to all of our friends for me, sir, for in my heart they are all welcome. c/ Lady Macbeth is telling Macbeth to tell the lords who have come to his feast that she truly feels that they are all welcome
4a/ Macbeth: See, they encounter thee with their hearts' thanks. b/ And they respond to you with their hearts as well. (3.4.9) c/ Macbeth is telling Lady Macbeth that they truly feel the same way about her
5a/ Lennox: Was not that nobly done? Ay, and wisely too, For 'twould have anger'd any heart alive, To hear the men deny't. (3.6.12-14) b/ That was the right thing to do, wasn’t it? Yes, and it was the wise thing, too, because we all would have been outraged to hear those two deny their crime. c/ Lennox is sarcastically speaking of Macbeth’s actions, and he is suggesting that Macbeth is actually behind the King’s murder.
Act 3 Conclusion
1/ In Act 3 the heart represents that a person truly feels about someone or something else. The heart is where Lady Macbeth feels that her guests are welcome, it is where Macbeth and Lady Macbeth hide their true intentions of murdering Banquo and it is also where the Lords get their feelings for Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.
2/ The heart is where Macbeth hides his true intentions and uses a mask on his face to cover them
Macbeth: Act 2 (Scene 3-4)
1a/ Macduff: O horror, horror, horror, Tongue nor heart cannot conceive nor name thee! (2.3.40-41) b/ Oh, horror, horror, horror! This is beyond words and beyond belief! c/ Macduff comes back from the King’s room and cannot believe what he is seeing, he is appalled.
2a/ Steeped in the colors of their trade, their daggers, Unmannerly breeched with gore. Who could refrain,That had a heart to love, and in that heart, Courage to make ’s love known? (2.3.95-99) b/ Then right next to him I saw the murderers, dripping with blood, their daggers rudely covered in gore. Who could have restrained himself, who loved Duncan and had the courage to act on it? c/ Here Macbeth is talking to Macduff and Donalbain and is trying to explain to them why he killed the two suspects in the King’s murder.
Act 2 (Scene 3-4) Conclusion
In these two scenes the word heart is, again, a place to find true emotions. The heart is where Macbeth and the other characters of this play access their true self and find out what they truly want out of a certain situation.
