Macbeth Appearance Vs Reality Essay
Have you ever seen an attractive burger on a McDonald's commercial, but when you actually purchase one, it looks completely different than the advertisement? That is exactly what appearance vs. reality is. It is also one of the most frequently used themes in literature and William Shakespeare often included it within soliloquies to subtly highlight the main idea of his plays. In the play Macbeth, you will learn a lot about Macbeth’s character development in regards to “appearance vs. reality” as he seems to be a noble and trustworthy person but turns cruel and loses morality throughout the play. In Act 1 Scene 7, Macbeth’s character is starting to show ambition, but is not entirely bad yet. Then in Act 2 Scene 1, he starts to become more violent …show more content…
Furthermore, Macbeth states that “false face must hide what the false heart doth know” (1.7.92). This further develops the theme of “appearance vs. reality” because he starts to show ambition. Due to the fact that he will act completely normal and innocent to mask the strategy behind his plans to murder Duncan, really says a lot about his developing character in terms of the major theme. Firstly, the soliloquies in Act 1 establishes that Macbeth’s appearance is an honourable person but his personality starts to falter. As the play unfolds in Act 2, it is shown that his noble presentation is starting to deteriorate as his thoughts are getting more distraught. By the time Act 3 approaches, Macbeth has completely developed into a inhumane character with no morals or feelings of guilt. In my opinion, figuring out Macbeth’s character development was a little bit confusing. Themes can be difficult to identify at the beginning of literature pieces, but once you recognize them, it helps you understand the storyline and characters

    This shows how brave Macbeth was, but it also shows how ruthless Macbeth can be. Once, Macbeth learns that he will be king in the future, he kills Duncan to become king, and anyone else that would get in his way. This is shown when, after Macbeth has killed Duncan and Banquo, he finds out he also needs to kill Macduff to keep the crown. Macbeth says, “Then live, Macduff; what need I fear of the thee? / But yet I’ll make assurance double sure, / And take a bond of fate.     The olny thing Macbeth is concerned with is power. Macbeth is the star of the play, the whole story is focused around his rise and fall from power. He, more than anyone displays the idea that people only do what they do to benefit and further themselves. He doesn't kill king Duncan because he thinks that it is for the better good of Scotland, he does it for his own personal gain.     The actions of Macbeth and other characters show that appearances are misleading and Shakespeare created dialogue that constantly incorporates techniques that represent this duplicity. Equivocation is especially found in the line from Act 1 Scene 7: “False face must hide what the false heart doth know." Shakespeare uses repetition of the adjective false to link the appearance of the face and the heart. Macbeth’s facial expression is false as he is acting customary to the routine of everyday life, whilst in fact covering up the guilt of murder. Macbeth’s heart is false as he displays meaningful and authentic sorrow for the death of Duncan, a beloved King, when in fact he is the one who killed him and becomes King as a result. The word false links the face and the heart as aspects of Macbeth’s dishonesty. Another technique Shakespeare uses to create a sense of duplicity is irony, which is evident in the quote from Act 1 Scene 4. “There's no art to find the mind's construction in the face”. This was said by Duncan to his son about the courage of the Thane of Cawdor during his execution. Duncan makes this judgement quite casually and unemotionally, which is ironic for it is this very theory which is proved when Duncan himself is murdered.
