Macbeth Act 1
Act 1 Macbeth In Act 1 of Macbeth by Shakespeare I found the mood to be shifty. The way the weather and surrounding elements suddenly change, how the witches speak, and the relationship between Lady Macbeth and Macbeth are really shady and mysterious. As the reader I never really know what to expect next from the setting or the characters.

The weather in Act 1 was a dark factor, meaning by the way the thunder suddenly began appear when the reader knows something isn't align. Also the way the crow croaks it's a foreshadowing where the crow symbolizes death growing nearer. It has a creepy, spine-chilling feel that made me feel nervous. "The raven himself is hoarse that croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan under my battlements "
(Act 1 Scene 5 Page 313 Line 37)
This is foreshadowing Duncan's death in a very creepy way.

The three witches are simply terrifyingly thought provoking as in everything they say has another dark and mysterious meaning that paradoxes itself sometimes and I get this feeling of uncertainty just reading it. "Fair is foul and foul is fair"
(Act 1 Scene 1 Page 302 Line 10) this means that everything you think is morally correct and ethical is wrong. That's hard to wrap your brain around and it's scary not being able to understand certain things. I feel this adds alot to the shifty feeling.

The relationship of the Macbeths is backwards, Lady Macbeth is twisted and cruel, like the witches, while Macbeth is more ethical but being led by a bad example. Lady Macbeth is a corrupted mind that influences Macbeth into doing the unspeakable. The way she speaks about her not acting as a woman and wanting to do deeds that are horrid is very shifty. "The raven himself is hoarse that croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan under my battlements..."
(Act 1 Scene 5 Page 313 Line 37) ( and the rest of her soliloqui ) This was very intriguing although I though she sounded alot like the

I was very confused at the beginning of the play. I thought it was weird with the witches, and I was still getting used to the old English language. I thought it started to get interesting when the witches had told Macbeth that he would become the Thane of Cawdor and then he actually did! I think this is what starts Macbeth’s ambition towards the series of events that will happen in the play. I think that the first three scenes in Act 1 set the dark mood for the entire play with the storm and witches ext. Once Lady Macbeth heard of what the witches had predicted I think was when Duncan’s life was officially over. Lady Macbeth kind of took over the play at this point. She is very persuasive, like convincing Macbeth that they were going to kill Duncan. She makes him feel as if he’s stupid and mocks him when he has fears about Duncan. I was surprised by Macbeth’s thoughts about killing Duncan I didn’t think he would do something so great, and I think that something is going to come back around to get him if he goes through with it. I think that he should just wait for his turn to be king. Lady Macbeth offers Macbeth a plan to kill Duncan, and he accepts. ____________________________________________________________…

The three Witches in Macbeth are the stereotypical supernatural, threatening character. To the Jacobean audience the characters would be terrifying in a way the modern reader could not understand, especially considering the Witch Hunts conducted by King James, allegedly a descendent of the character Banquo in the play. Immediately, the first characters to be introduced are the witches and the scene is set to be “thunder and lightning” – also a signature sign of the gothic. As the dialogue begins it becomes evident that the witches are plotting some wrong doing as suggested by phrases like “when the hurlyburlys done, when the battles lost and won”. These phrases conjure images of battle and conflict; we soon learn that Macbeth is on his way back from a battle and from hereafter in the play the conflict for Macbeth personally is only just beginning.…

People tend to seem good and righteous but may actually be tainted or evil, and vice versa. Macbeth a bold “Thane of Cawdor” whose loyalty was to Duncan, became as evil and corrupted as the witches he talked to. They told him that he would become the future king and as these thoughts pondered in his head it consumed him by which he made the descion to kill the king in order to obtain the throne. In the play “Macbeth” by Shakespeare the theme “virtue versus evil” is developed through situational irony, dramatic irony, and verbal irony of the three prophetic apparitions of an armed head, a bloody child, and a crowned child holding a tree. An armed head, situational irony because Macbeth a military man himself supposed to be great and honorable who really became wicked had gotten his head torn off by Macduff in order to fulfill the prophecy. The image of a bloody child, dramatic irony as a result of no one but Macduff knowing that his mother had a caesarian - section until he advised it to the audience and Macbeth. It was “virtuous” because Macduff killed Macbeth although it was “evil” because it was treason to kill the king. A crown child holding a tree, verbal irony on account of that child being Malcolm the future king and he announces to the soldiers to move towards Macbeth. The “virtue” is that Malcolm a venerable character who has not been poisoned or manipulated as Macbeth an “evil” one.…

Shakespeare immediately and emphatically introduces the Gothic theme in the first scene within the first Act. This is demonstrated with him setting the scene using the stage direction “Thunder and lightning”. Such weather is a typical gothic dimension exploited by several authors, thus aiding the construction of a gothic play, and arguably is prophesising the future turmoil and disintegration of order. The ‘thunder and lightning’ displays the reckless elements of nature which create turmoil and fear, leaving the audience in a state of despair. It may be argued that this weather and disturbance of nature is a premonition of the immediately impending presence of the supernatural witches, but also it is used to represent the future disruption to human nature, in particular the protagonist, Macbeth’s. This weather sets the tone for the arrival of the witches, who represent the supernatural within the play, another prominent gothic dimension. The supernatural aura that the witches bring to the first scene similarly adds to the confusion and terror since they directly conflict with that which is natural. The presence of these foul witches, together with the disruption of nature evokes anxiety in the audience, thus enhancing the gothic tone of the play.…

The first part of the quote is a simile and the second part is a metaphor. Macbeth is reluctant to murder the king. But Lady Macbeth, driven by ambition, instigates him to kill Duncan when he is asleep. She tells him to put on an appearance of innocence but be as venomous as the snake that hides behind it. "be thou the serpent under it" is a metaphor because the word of comparison is absent and both Macbeth and Serpent are spoken of as one and the same. By doing this, it gives the reader a sense of just how evil and two-faced Macbeth is told to be.…

An important moment in the play ‘Macbeth’ by William Shakespeare is how we see after many internal conflicting struggles Macbeth has, with good and evil he chooses to commit a murder. After Lady Macbeth received a letter from her husband informing her of the witches prophesy, of him becoming King and then her argument with Macbeth about the need to kill the current King Duncan, the play then sets up the inner conflict that Macbeth faces. Through many manipulating ways Macbeths wife, Lady Macbeth, swayed her husband to choose the path that ultimately lead to his own death.…

While they share all these similarities both are very different characters in that one has a strong central role while the other has a more passive role in the play. Lady Macbeth is the person who not only persuades but demands that Macbeth murders Duncan by insulting his manhood. She as well is the one who then later convinces Macbeth that their deed will be washed away and everything would be right a “little water washes us from this deed.” For this reason it is that Lady Macbeth is heavily involved in the planning and killing of Duncan and later all the other…
