Summary: A sad and horrific event happened on December 14, 2012. A gunman by the name of Adam Lanza, shot and killed 26 people, including 20 children and 6 staff, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn, and then killed himself. President Obama commented on this tragedy by vowing to “use whatever power this office holds”, alluding to a start of gun control. At a memorial speech for the 27 victims Obama stated that leaders can no longer stand by idly and let these things happen. “These tragedies must end” is how he put it. His speech seemed significantly promising by his definite action, for a President who did not utilize much political capital during the 3 other shootings of his term. Obama repeatedly states that he will do whatever he can within his power to prevent future events like this from happening. Adam Lanza had hundreds of rounds of ammunition still left after he shot himself. He shot himself as police drew near which means he could have shot more people if police wouldn’t have come then. The president offered no specific proposal as there is rising pressure for tighter gun control, but the administration has the makings of a plan, just not an advanced one. The president also said that he would try and work with mental health professionals and parents and educators. Senator Joseph I Lieberman feels like these events are recurrent and if nothing is done now, they will not feel the pain in future when they examine this thoroughly. Governor Molloy said on a CBS program that if people can walk in a building with 30 rounds of ammunition, a decision of weapon control needs to be sought out.

Reflection: 1) I do not think that the second amendment should be changed in a way that would ban people from gun ownership. I strongly believe the statement “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” Adam Lanza was clearly disturbed; he had mental issues. If he really wanted to go kill those students and his parents, he would have found

In “shootings”, Adam Gopnik speaks about a shooting that took place in Virginia Tech Engineering building, and how the parents of the victims were told that it was not the right moment to ask questions. Gopnik also gives his points of view on how the shooting could have been avoided. Gopnik suggests that the main reason why these types of incidents keep happening in the United States is because there is a lack of security and requirements on who should not be able to buy a gun. The government should do what others countries are doing, and Gopnik’s example, is the massacre that happened in Paris Suborn of Nanterre in 2002, when a man killed eight people at a municipal meeting. Gun control became a key issue in the presidential…

Strict gun control legislation may benefit public safety. In 2013, after the deadly Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, President Obama released a three-pronged plan to reduce gun violence in the United States. The plan would improve a potential firearm buyer’s background investigation, prohibit military-type assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, enhance penalties for illegal gun trafficking and bar straw purchasers to buy guns for unauthorized people or uses. Additionally, President Obama released twenty-three executive actions to improve mental health data sharing and enforcement, and instructed the Attorney General to make recommendations to safeguard dangerous individuals cannot own firearms.…

Just since 2013, there have been over 143 school shootings in the United States. Just in 2015, there has been over 45 school shootings in the United States. In some states, new laws have been added stating that if you’re going to buy a gun, you will need a background check. They do this for the safety of other people but not only that; but for the safety of that person as well. The United States government as well as Obama is on the debate on weather to add more strict laws for gun control in America.…

America has the highest gun homicide rate, the highest number of guns per capital and the highest rate of deaths due to assault. On December 14, 2012, 20-year-old Adam Lanza brutally shot twenty children and six adults in a mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the village of Sandy Hook in Newtown, Connecticut. This sandy hook shooting is one of the most recent tragedies in America which brings politicians and citizens around the country talking about gun control. The Second Amendment in the United States constitution protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms, which will make the situation more intense if they wanted to pass a law that would contrast the second amendment. An article Why I’m Against Gun Control by Peter Tucci, and another article Making Gun Control Happen by Patrick Radden Keefe, express their feelings on gun control.…

The word safe has many different definitions when in the context of firearms. Many republicans believe that the country will not be safe until citizens can freely defend themselves, their families, and their homes through the use of weapons, if necessary. In contrast, many democrats believe that the nation will not be safe until guns are taken out of the hands of all individuals, with the exception of police and federal agents. Since Obama is democratic, his views of safety relate closely to the average democratic view, however his plans in his executive action are far from unconstitutional. The White House claims that in an effort to make the nation safer, Obama’s executive order calls for a limitation on the size of magazines (“FACTS”). In not so distant history, this limitation on the size of magazines could have prevented the deaths of numerous individuals. Adam Lanza, the man who committed the acts of violence against Sandy Hook Elementary School was armed with two pistols and a Bushmaster .223 caliber AR-15 assault rifle (“The Promise”). He loaded—and reloaded— the firearms with “ten 30-round high-capacity magazines and twenty 20-round magazines,” and these 700 rounds were enough to kill everyone in the school” (“The Promise”). It was only during the brief moments in which he was changing magazines that several children were able to escape. If Lanza had been limited to standard 10-round magazines, he would have had to reload 16 times instead of six, thus providing more time for the children to escape, resulting in less unnecessary deaths. With this one tragedy, it is evident that Obama’s plan to reduce the size of magazines is beneficial and can lead to less fatalities, which in return makes the nation safer…

Have you been thinking about gun control lately? Have you been thinking about how safe you really are in this world including your children’s safety? Can you believe that the total number of incidents in 2015 is a shocking number of 48,825? That is completely insane. Currently gun control is a topic of conversation mostly because of the recent tragedies. Statistics show that gun violence is raising the bar in tragedies through the year, now no legitimate study in the U.S. has ever shown that gun control has no positive impact on crime, death rates are on the rise, and more incidents are occurring in smaller towns during daily routines.…

Gun control can mean anything from government registration of firearms or to ban the manufacture, sale, or possession of certain types of firearms. Gun restrictions are needed for the safety for the people. According to the Brady Campaign, 31 Americans are murdered with guns every day and 151 are treated at a hospital. On average, 55 people kill themselves with a firearm and 46 people are shot or killed in an accident with a weapon. More than 200 million weapons in America have turned the entire country into a battle zone. Thousands of people who own guns are in the temptation to commit a crime. Some countries have banned assault weapons according to the Bustle Article but handguns are widely used and cheaper than assault weapons. Many firearms involved in crimes are cheap handguns called “Saturday Night Specials”. Many families own these types of handguns because they feel the need to protect themselves but eventually end up killing one another or use it for wrong doings. On December 14, 2012, twenty year old Adam Lanza killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, before killing twenty children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. CNN stated that Nancy Lanza had purchased the weapons and that Adam Lanza was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Ever since the mass shooting, it has changed how people view guns. On Obama’s executive action on gun control, he said “Every time I think about those kids, it gets me mad," while pausing and wiping away tears. People take advantage of guns and use them for crimes such as stealing and rape. More gun control laws need to be passed to protect women against domestic violence and stalkers. Stricter restriction that surpass background checks are needed since criminals will find a way to access weapons. As said by the Gun Control Pro/Con website, “background checks are not required on all gun sales, so domestic abusers prohibited…

If you live in the United States, you are probably used to hearing about shootings happening somewhere in the country pretty frequently because of the poor gun control. The US is accountable for the most mass shootings in the world, but the government still decides to do nothing to help the situation at all. How many more children do parents need to bury, parents children have to say goodbye to, and role models do we have to lose before the government finally does something about it? The only answer to that question is, no one knows. The answer that so many around the country have been praying to have, and the answer that no one can give to them. The answer that, families of those that we have lost over the years and civilians that are scared…

Gun control controversies are not something that has just come about in the past few months. America has dealt with gun control issues for decades, as well as anti-gun groups that want to disarm America. In 2009 before Barack Obama got sworn into office for a second term, gun sales were on the rise around the country. Gun sales continued to rise mostly out of fear that once in office, Barack Obama would promote legislation to disarm the American citizens. In a news conference Mr. Obama stated, “Gun-owning Americans do not need to rush out and stock up before he is sworn in next month. I believe in common-sense gun safety laws, and I believe in the second amendment”. (Hoar, 2009, para. 1) Mr. Obama also states, “Lawful gun owners have nothing to fear. I said that throughout the campaign. I have not indicated anything different during the transition. I think people can take me at my word. "(Hoar, 2009, Para. 1) Here in 2013, those lawful gun owners are just as afraid, if not more, than they…
