(VO) In a unique "20/20" experiment, two families have volunteered to change their diets and their exercise regimes to try and lose weight forever. They're working with Olympians Paul and Morgan Hamm and their trainer, Miles Avery, who's designed personal exercise regimes for both families. They'll be doing intensive, hour-long workouts, three times every week. Like 50 percent of Americans, our families haven't been doing enough exercise to gain any lasting benefits. That's all about to change.

But Jessie is suffering. She's craving fast food.
JESSIE RANKIN (DAUGHTER)
I really am going through sugar withdrawal. It's really hard for me. Like, I've been craving McDonald's a lot. And, you know, a couple days ago I was craving Krispy Kreme doughnuts. I mean, it's just -it's so hard.
MARTIN BASHIR (ABC NEWS)
(VO) Now, even on her birthday, it's low fat cheesecake. She likes it, but the cravings aren't going away. Dema and Ed are becoming concerned about their daughter.
DEMA RANKIN (MOTHER)
I am worried about Jessie because I do want her to lose this weight and I think it will be better for her in the long run. And the doctor's been wanting her to lose weight for a long time. So let's hope she keeps doing it.
JESSIE RANKIN (DAUGHTER)
It really has been tough. I've tried really hard to be motivated. I tried really hard, you know to just go alone with everything, you know, be happy about it. But it's just -I'm a lazy teenager.
MARTIN BASHIR (ABC NEWS)

Pressures to stay fit and skinny are becoming increasingly overwhelming from media, society, and doctors as obesity climbs toward becoming an epidemic, claims Mary Ray Worley. Worley, a member of National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA), believes that today’s society is now obsessed with being fit/thin to the point of people “would rather die or cut off a limb than be fat” (163). In her article, “Fat and Happy: In Defense of Fat Acceptance,” she is on a mission to dispel the belief that society should stigmatize overweight people to coerce them into losing weight; she wants people of high weights to accept themselves and love their bodies the way they are and to forge “a new relationship with our bodies, one that doesn’t involve…

I had been overweight since my early teens, as time passed it continued to worsen. at the age of 15 I was on the brink of obesity; I had to decide a change in my life. My life had consisted of school and video games; these combined had led me to an unhealthy lifestyle. I had dedicated years into my video game hobby, but this was the least active of my time. My hobby had to go, a new hobby had emerged: bodybuilding. Bodybuilding had given me a satisfaction that my previous hobby did not give, the satisfaction of working; that patience and efforts lead to greater satisfaction than momentary things like video…

You should have seen me in my mother's kitchen the other night when I stopped by for dinner. The pepper jack cheese was sitting there, in a bowl, grated, and taunting me. A bowl of cheese has become my weakness. Why? Because I have been depriving myself of everything dairy for the past month! So I nibbled. Sue me. BUT - something amazing happened over the weekend that I just had to share. Upon starting my journey in late May, early June of this year ( http://bit.ly/aQOnJO ) I had weighed myself obsessively. Every scale I came in contact with, I weighed myself. At home I had a digital scale, and a normal everyday $5 scale from Walgreens. At my mother's I had my sister's digital scale to use and at the in-law's I had a digital scale and an old school one. For the longest time I was only dropping 3-5 lbs here and there, gaining it back, losing it again, etc etc.... Every Monday was my "restart day". "Ok Amy, seriously, get on track this week." The eating wasn't so much my problem. I was spacing my meals out, eating tons of veggies and fruit, and trying to stick to my routine. Sure, yes, of course...let's throw the beer in there, because what other 28 yr old do you know when they get a break from their kids doesn't have a beer? Thank you. My problem was finding time to work out, exercise, get any kind of movement in. I took my son for "walks" which are really runs because I have to jog to keep up with him. And this little sucker lasts about a good mile, and then we get to "walk". So needless to say my cardio was come and go, absolutely no weight or strength training was occurring except for the occasional leg lifts and crunches I would do before bed, IF I remembered. Combine this with 2 vacations, 2 weeks apart filled with eating out, chips and dips and of course complete break from routine. So when June was coming to an end I was prepared to have July 1st as my "restart day" until I remembered the scales. I had…

One may question, how can weight loss be seeing as a negative issue? What about those who are seriously obese? What about those who are diseased because of being overweight? Undeniably, there are always exceptional cases. I have to admit that there really are some overweight people who need to watch out for their weight and even go on a diet. I think only those who are permitted and advised by doctors should go on to a diet but of course in a healthy way. People should not start losing weight because they felt they are…

Before we begin, I would make it very clear to Miss E that she must be honest with me and that I am not going to judge her in any way. Many overweight people are ashamed by their overeating and as shame is such a huge emotion to deal with, they tend to act in secret, believing that if they over indulged in public then they would be judged. This sense of shame often comes from their childhood experiences;…

It is estimated that 55% of the adult population in the United States are either obese or overweight (National Institutes of Health, National Heart Lung, and Blood Institute, 1998). Obesity substantially increases an individual’s risk of suffering from chronic diseases such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, and diabetes. Those with excess fat in the abdominal area are at increased health risk (National Institutes of Health, National Heart Lung, and Blood Institute). In an attempt to define the role of exercise in the treatment and prevention of obesity, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) held a scientific roundtable to address this subject. Following the meeting, several consensus statements regarding physical activity and public health were released. Two statements are of particular interest to the applied exercise professional. The first statement declares that the addition of exercise to a diet with restricted caloric intake promotes fat loss, while maintaining fat free mass. The second statement claims that physical activity, without caloric restriction, minimally if at all affects fat loss. The statements suggest that to optimize weight loss, a combination of diet and exercise is best, and that exercise alone will not suffice. Although it is well established that a regimen of diet and exercise is the best way to control body weight, a recent review by Ross, Freeman, and Janssen (2000) challenges ACSM’s statement that exercise alone is not an effective method of weight loss. This review suggests that the studies this statement was based upon do not effectively compare caloric restricting programs to increased energy expenditure programs. They conclude that if these factors were equal, exercise alone can be as effective as caloric restriction for weight loss. The purpose of this article is to present Ross et al.’s argument contrasting the ACSM consensus…
