Imagine you were playing baseball and all of a sudden you hit a homerun and break a window. What would you do would you say the truth or just say a lie. In this case, I firmly believe that lying is okay when you are trying to save someone’s life or get someone out of trouble.…
According to the author of Why We Lie , David Smith we are not aware of the lies we tell. That we as social beings are so good at deception we have fooled ourselves. In society, those who are too honest or blunt are antisocial or even pathological. People want to hear what they want to hear, it doesn’t matter if it's true or not. Which in way lying gives us social interaction benefits, but what are the cons? According to researchers Anita Kelly and LiJuan Wang of Notre Dame, lying can cause stress. Which is bad for your health . Also if we were to think what makes someone a criminal or a model citizen. Is lying to protect others versus lying to benefit yourself. So if lying did deteriorate, our society’s crime rate would too. Its correlated with cheating and…
For example, when we lie about something serious like someone got into a really bad car accident and we just lie about it saying that nothing happened and all its ok; this can result in difficulties for the people…
We have become a gullible nation where we will believe that most of the stuff that is told to us is the truth. Think…
Lying is unacceptable as it is morally wrong. For example, Truthfulness are statements which cannot be avoided is the duty of a duty of a person to everyone, however bad the disadvantage.(Kant, 4) The people have a duty to not lie no matter the reason, like to protect people from emotional pain. Kant believes that there are no excuses for lying, except I believe lying is ok to protect someone from death. In addition, “a lie, even if it does not wrong any individual, always harms mankind individually.”(Bok,4) Lying hurts the morality of mankind because it makes…
Some people may argue that lying can destroy your human dignity. For example,Immanuel Kant says,”Lies harm the liar himself,by destroying his human dignity and making him more worthless even than a small thing. This an understandable concern, however lies protect others from hearing the horrible truth. This argument is also wrong because lying lets life roll on smoothly without having…
Lying is sometimes acceptable justable when you are trying to protect others or yourself. For example, Barbara Ballinger says “If you’re hiding Anne Frank in your attic because her life is on danger” (Ballinger P11). This shows that it is okay lie if you are protecting someone.…
According to Neustadt, a president’s professional reputation rests in the expectations of political players. These players include politicians, military officers, heads of industry, foreign officials, and members of the media. Neustadt refers to these political actors collectively as the Washington Community. Influencing this Community is a key aspect of the President’s job. The Community’s perceptions of a president’s likely response to their actions guides which course they take. As such “what other men expect of [the President] becomes a cardinal factor in the President’s own power to persuade.” Consistency and communication are key to maintaining a professional reputation. Neustadt argues that political actors are constantly attempting to anticipate the abilities and will of the president to use said abilities. A president cannot assert influence on an actor that believes them weak or without bargaining ability as the actor does not view the president as likely to assert strong power or able to deliver on bargain…
I am a soldier in the war. I’m sorry for not telling you that I was joining the army but didn’t want to get your hopes up if something happened to me. Life as a soldier was difficult because you had small rations and a lot of people died from scared food and products that were already spoiled. I remember my Sargent telling me to be careful out there in the trenches because enemy forces could rush you at any time and kill you from behind. I will never forget the moment when our dugout was so muddy that we were camouflaging with the mud because of the rain. One side of the barbed wire was a ton of dead bodies that had a lot of flies and rats that were surrounding the bodies and they were eating their flesh. Also on the other side there was a machine gun turret that was killing enemies on No Mans Land. I got shot in the leg and caused me to get a wound and also I ended up in the hospital because I had trench foot, which is a foot disease that kills your skin cells. I will never forget how bad it smelled because of people dying and really sick. We always had to be on our guard because enemies attempted to bomb our trench. The soldiers that survived the bombing were wounded and many of them had lice, which made them very unhealthy because it lived on our skin. When we where on the battlefield we frequently had to have a gas mask present because the air was intoxicated with chemical gases that didn’t let us breathe. Every commander got there own personal rifle because the were in charge. I’m glad I wrote you this letter to tell you the truth. I am so sorry about every thing. I hope you understand why I did this.…
I hope all is well at home. Tell everyone that I miss them very much. I managed to find some paper to write on so I can send you this letter. It’s cold and rainy often here and they haven’t blown the whistle in a while. I have been in the trenches for nearly a month with the British troops. It feels like I have been here for years. “I am preparing to go to the front and I am only sorry that I did not see you all before I went but then mother dear do not lose heart, I may come back again. And mother dear, do have courage. I will be alright, there are thousands of other mothers and relatives in the same circumstances and if I do die I will die with a good heart and all your love upon my lips.”1 I’m hungry all the time because food is scarce. Even when we get food, it is awful. The bread is so raw and dry that sometimes I do not even bother eating it. “This is a place to be in, we have to fight like tigers to get our food here soon as ever it comes up… some get a lot and some don’t get any. If we have money it is a hard job to spend it, if you go the coffee shop or canteen, you have to wait about two hours before it is your turn to be served. If I get through this lot, no more for me.”2 War is definitely not what I expected it to be. Death and disease is all around me and the naïve, glorious thoughts I had about war have now disappeared. “Piles of bodies lie next to me at all times, wounded, dead, or even men…
I wanted to write you this letter because now the Great War is over and there are some topics that I wanted to address, and, since we haven’t talked since the war started, I wanted to make sure that you know that I am okay. As you most likely know, I’m still living and working in Washington County, Virginia. I haven’t had much involvement in the war efforts myself, however, I am waiting for my husband’s return from fighting in Europe, or a letter saying that he has passed away. Since he is gone, I have had to take care of the farm and work a low-salary part-time job, which has changed my everyday life a lot.…
The military life has not treated me well at all, and all of the propaganda about the Germans back home riled me up for a job that I would have never expected. The living conditions here are horrid, and every day I question how I am still living and have enough power left in my body to write this letter. Every day, my friends in my platoon die from either the awful conditions, or they are blown to fractions from enemy shrapnel. Besides the numerous dead bodies, there are large, repulsive rats that feed on the dead bodies of my friends. Since they are so numerous, they’ve gotten bold enough to start stealing our bread.…
As Barry Ritholtz, the CIO of Ritholtz Wealth Management, asserted, "Little white lies are told by humans all the time. Indeed, lying is often how we get through each day in a happy little bubble." Lying is woven into the fabric of society. Humanity spends so much time and energy justifying its actions and beliefs, that lying seems like the easy alternative, whether to themselves or to others, than simply delving into the "real reasons". That is at the heart of a lie and its mask may be used to gain power, as in the case with Richard Milhous Nixon. Harry Truman expresses his opinion by stating, "Nixon is one of the few in the history of this country to run for high office talking out of both sides of his mouth at the same time and lying out…
Lying is a part of life for each and every person on the planet. We do it everyday wethere we know it or not. Grown adults do it more than childern do , people lie to save drama or to keep everyone happy. That person who sits in the front row in chearch may say she lives life by the " book" and knows but she could be the main one in the town messing up. I believe if the Government told the truth about what goes on the US an the world we would all be at home with arsonals of wepons and everyday society wouldn't be the same. To me lie dectores are not as helpful…
Lying destroys trust amongst people and results in lost prestige. When trust is lost, it is difficult to earn it back because we tend to assume that a person who has lied once will lie to us again. We then start to put our defences up against that person in order not to be deceived once again. Not only that, sometimes, we also tend to bear a grudge for long periods of time and it takes a while before the person who lied is forgiven, that is, if we ever choose to forgive and forget. The…
