One important thing to notice is that exactly one half of the moon is always illuminated by the sun. Of course that is perfectly logical, but you need to visualize it in order to understand the phases. At certain times we see both the sunlit portion and the shadowed portion -- and that creates the various moon phase shapes we are all familiar with. Also note that the shadowed part of the moon is invisible to the naked eye; in the diagram above, it is only shown for clarification purposes. Finally, please realize this diagram is only meant to demonstrate how the phases work; the small inner moons in the diagram do not show the fact that the same side of the moon always faces Earth.…

Friday November 30, 2012: The moon is now at its highest point in the night sky and it is now approximately 1:45 AM. The red-orange tint has gone away as there is no more sunlight for it to reflect. The moon has definitely shrunk as the night has progressed. It appears to be roughly ¾ of an inch in diameter when my arm is fully extended. This is roughly the same amount of a decrease as I had predicted in my hypothesis.…

Matsushima became Ph.D. adviser to them both, and during a total eclipse of the moon on December 30, 1963, he introduced them to the art of astronomical observation. Their “observatory” was a converted cornfield out in the middle of nowhere with a tiny telescope that hadn’t been used in years. The night of the eclipse also happened to be the coldest day of the year at thirty degrees below zero, but they stuck it out and that night produced a curve of the moon’s brightness as it passed through the Earth’s shadow. Normally,…

Optics flickered towards the west a smile drawing itself upon the lips of the male. He adored moons such as this, known readily in the ancient world as the harvest or wolf moon, the circular orb in the sky shown such as this only twice per year; once in the spring and once in the fall during the equinox consisting of exactly 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night. Such moons were both a blessing and a curse, for though they granted better light in which to hunt by it also meant the prey was able to see the predator with increased ease as there were fewer shadows in which to stalk. But it did not matter for this turn of the tables would only last so long before it moved in favor of the predator once again. When the moon was…

In his last, and unfinished, story “The Last Tycoon,” readers can see a constant moon imagery. Piacentino says that the moon imagery “serve to highlight the illusive quality of Hollywood and the motion picture industry generally and that of Monroe Stahr particularly, the latter a major influence on the Hollywood dream world". The moon is meant to emphasize “magic, fantasy and the mystique of Stahr’s dreams.” ( Piacentino…

Why is the moon visible at different times of the day throughout the lunar cycle? I know that it happens, but I am not sure why. I want to research this when I have more time to explore more about the moon. I also wonder a few things about both the moon and about teaching and learning. I wonder how much the moon affects popular culture; I now notice more song lyrics about the moon. Career and Technical Education could study the moon in this manner to better understand advertising, technology, and sales. In relation to teaching and learning, I wonder how the population views Career and Technical Education. When we studied the Committee of Ten, it appeared that the general attitude about vocational education was negative; it was for those who did not have the “ability” to learn (National Education Association, 1894). I also want to learn more about Expeditionary Learning and how Family and Consumer Sciences can utilize it in teaching. Farrell’s (2000) idea of stepping back and letting students take charge intrigues me and I want to look into this idea more. Overall, this was a very powerful learning experience. I look forward to further explore these ideas in my professional year and…

In the film, Corpse Bride, Burton uses artificial moon light in order to create a look of innocence or amity. This is ironic because the characters are dark and daunt. The moon light on Victor in the woods as he looks at Emily shows his innocence. Also, the moon lighting creates an angelic glow on Victor. The moon light sets a tone of romance as well.…
