Luck Definition
The word choices such as “luck” and “opportunity,” in my opinion should not be in the same sentence. I believe the speaker is trying to say that luck has nothing to do with preparation or opportunity; but if you prepare and work hard the opportunity will come, where you can use your knowledge and skills to get you to where you want to be.
When you hear someone say “luck” what comes to mind? For me, I think of someone gambling, and the phrase they were lucky enough to win. Or someone who made that “lucky” basketball shot. That is what I think of when it comes to the word “luck”. I agree that when we prepare and work hard an opportunity will come where you can put all your hard work, preparations and dedication to practice. For example; those

In Mad Dogs by Douglas Raybeck I read chapter ten Sunstroke. In this chapter Raybeck is stricken by luck that was not foreseen in one major way and a couple of others as well. This unexpected pot of gold he has been searching for was stumbled upon when accompanying a friend Yusof Ismail that has been consistently asking if not begging to come visit his parents in the village of Kampong Paru-Paru. One way luck was involved is that he got to see another part of the culture a more deprived. The main thing that luck had given to him is exposing smuggling. Luck good and bad can play an unexpected role in fieldwork.…

Whether success is by chance, is up to you to interpret what chance means. If chance means that the kids born earlier in the year were lucky enough to be born at that time, then yes, success comes by chance. The way I interpret is that success does not come from chance. Yes, these kids were born earlier in the year, therefore, were given a better chance. But through that chance, they were given better opportunities and the help from better piers to become successful. The question, “does success come from chance?” could really go either way. It is all about how you interpret the question. But when it comes down to it, you cannot become successful on your…

“Luck,” by Mark Twain, you are either born with it or born without it; this short story gives insight on how your most idolized idols are just normal, everyday people, how your preconceived opinions of people can make you seem like an awful person, and how your own incompetence can be beneficial to those around you. Again, your favorite celebrity, whomever it may be, is not some demigod or king but rather a person who has come to achieve things that people in your inner circle have not achieved. The beginning narrator states, about Arthur Scoresby while at a banquet honoring him, “It was food and drink to me to look, and look, and look at that demigod; scanning, searching, noting: the quietness, the reserve, the noble gravity of his countenance; the simple honesty that expressed itself all over him; the sweet…

    1) I think that Bernard Williams refers to moral luck as when someone has the ability to possess moral judgment on a subject, but there are many things that are outside of the individuals control about that moral judgment that make one morally good or bad. For example, if one is doing something morally correct, but somehow, that morally correct action or subject turned out to have good or bad consequences would be considered moral luck if it turned out to be the right or wrong decision. Basically, luck can make a moral difference. Intrinsic luck is the luck that comes from the action at hand, while extrinsic luck comes from outside the action at hand. Williams describes intrinsic and extrinsic luck based on the story of Gauguin.…

To serve, as it does, to convince those with lack of motivation, or perhaps imagination, to remain stagnant with the hope that chance will smile upon them, the concept of luck is a farce. This is a truism that successful people understand. In fact, most successful people will state this truth almost as a proverb. For example, Oprah Winfrey has been quoted as saying, “Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.” Oprah Winfrey has the innate understanding that luck isn’t really luck at all. In fact, luck is the culmination of hard work.…

This deterministic approach is too “hand off.” Reshler eventually identifies what luck is, and juxtaposes it to Fate and Fortune. “Luck is a matter of having something good or bad happens that lies outside the horizon of effective foreseeability.” Luck is something unpredictable. Rescher expounds on the conundrum of luck, asserting there are three necessary attributes for an event to correctly be assessed as luck. A beneficiary or maleficiary, a development that is positive or negative from the standpoint of the interest of the affected individual, and that it is fortuitous. This approach seems to claim a methodical game such as chess or even me writing this paper relies on luck. The latter example seems like a hyperbole, yet I am maleficairy in writing the paper, I would also rather be playing Dota 2 instead of writing this paper, I also had planned on writing this paper two nights ago. I’m truly unlucky that I have to write a…

But being lucky isn’t always about winning the lottery or having things other people don’t have and you enjoy having it.
