Resources: Letter to the Editor Grading Criteria located on your student website

Write a 700- to 1,050-word letter to the editor explaining what responsibilities society has for protecting the rights of older adults.

Choose three of the questions below to address in your letter:

· When should families be responsible for related older adults? When should they not? Does this only pertain to immediate family members?

· When should friends or acquaintances be responsible? What if their choices go against the family’s wishes?

· When should hospitals, community service organizations, or other long-term care facilities be allowed to make major decisions for older adult individuals?

· When should the government be responsible for making important decisions? How involved should the government be in protecting the individual?

· Is there ever a circumstance when an older adult does not need outside protection? When would that be? Explain your answers.

You may be honest, but that doesn't mean your fellow students are. Always take precautions to protect your property at college. Laptops, mobile devices, MP3 players and other in-demand electronics are a favorite target for dishonest individuals. Always keep these items locked up in your room or on your person at all time. Don't leave them out in the open or let them out of your sight.

Your article pertaining to the crimes against the older population was thorough and well delivered. The elderly population is indeed becoming victimized on a larger scale than has been seen in the past. This increase is a result of the growing number of seniors living in society with little protection. Perhaps the most compelling part of your article was that of your question “Who is responsible for protecting these individuals?” You pose quite a thought and emotion invoking question and one which I could not help but share my thoughts on.…

The individuals you support or you, a career, the family? In situations where there is a conflict of interest or a dilemma between an individual’s rights and your duty of care, it is best practice to make sure the individual is aware of the consequences of their choice and that they have the mental capacity to understand the risks involved in their choice. It is their right as an individual to be able to make informed choices about their own lives even if you disagree with their choice. It is the right of every individual in your care to make choices and take risks. It is your role to assist them in making those choices and reducing the risks without compromising their rights. An individual may be restricted if his or her behaviour presents a serious risk of harm to his or herself or to…

Throughout reading articles published in your newspaper in the past few years and also in the broader media in Australia, I have become quite irritated that Australian Indigenous communities are still being treated with disrespect and wrongness by our government. All human beings should be treated as equals and have equal rights to the basic necessities such as quality health care. However we still fail to give our Indigenous communities the respect that they deserve, after all the heart ache we the non-indigenous Australians have caused them in the past it is only fair that we treat them with the utmost respect.…
