Loyalist Debate
Opening: The Loyalists are concerned about the disunity of the colonies. Without help from the British there would be complete anarchy. The British government supplies stability to the colonies. The colonists rely on the British army for protection. The colonists also rely on the trade with Britain as a vital part of their economy. The British put taxes into place to pay for the COLONISTS’ actions. And when the colonists rioted the British had to control them with the coercive acts.

Closing: The Loyalists of this country have a strong concern about our future. We still rely on England for stability. We have all seen attempts at unification by the patriots and the people of the New World. But, we will no longer sit around and watch all these attempts not go into effect.
We are not militarily ready as well as economically ready to possibly go to war with the most powerful nation in the world. The colonies can not afford to lose trade with Great Britain, they are our vital when it comes to resources. We have attempted to have a unified government in the past, who says that we could possibly run our own nation without the help of the very strong and powerful Britain? The intolerable acts were just a result of our childish behavior, Great Britain had every right to punish us. Just imagine if the roles were reversed, and we were Great Britain. We would want control over our colonies as well, especially if we thought they weren’t exactly ready to handle things on their own.
Arguments

Military:
The colonies aren’t prepared to fight a war against the most powerful navy in the world and a massive redcoat army (EK)
Colonial soldiers are limited and lack training (EK)
Britain has the greatest army + navy in the world. (EK)
If we rebel against Britain, they’ll take away their military/navy and were forced to rely on militias. (LO)
The colonists can not afford the loss of lives (EK)
Colonists didn’t have the money to maintain a national army
Other countries may attack us after the war, knowing we are a infant, and militarily and economically weak country
The English fought with us in the French and Indian War. What would happen if we needed their help in war again? We know that the French and Spanish want our land! Without British defense, they will take it. (SH)
The British may not want communications and supply lines to stretch far, however, they can just starve us out with a blockade (EK)
Economy
It may seem tempting to have a fresh start, but it will be difficult to develop our resources (EK)
How will we be able to afford all the expenses of war, we will lose people, possibly resources, and have our newfound economy crumble before our eyes? (EK)
We could benefit from the Trans-Atlantic Trade. We share a common heritage with England. Do the colonists want to fight their ‘brothers’ because of a problem in Parliament and the incompetency of the King (EK)
Separation from England will cause more economic harm than good (UR)
Property would drop in value, and so would the value of goods UR
We get benefits from Britain’s strong economy and trade because we have a secure Market there. It will be of much more difficulty to try to build up trade with other countries. UR
Britain was the colonists’ main source for goods from around the world
Currently, we don’t know how to support our economy (UR)
Sure, we’re being taxed, but the taxes in Britain are more expensive there, than they are here. (LO)
Government
We had tried making our own central government and we couldn’t even agree on that.
Under the British, We have a relatively stable Government. why should we replace it with a new government style that could lead instability?(UR)
What is the guarantee that our very own government will be taken over by a bunch of oppressive leaders? (EK)
We see the way the colonists are acting now how can they run an organized government?
Would we be able to unite, as our own nation, we are able to unite for the sole cause to rebel, but can we agree on governmental decisions rather than battle. Even now we have inner conflicts between loyalist and patriots.
The Mob-Like forms of protest will most likely take form as a tyrannical or mob ruled government(UR)
We pay less than the British citizens, and before our conflict started, we had a much easier time making fortune
The British are the reason that we got this far in the colonies, we might not be able to live without them (NB)
The Right
The oppressive acts passed by the British Crown and Parliament was a result of our failure to comply with a few temporary taxes.
The only reason Britain passed these Intolerable Acts were because of our own reckless behavior that they are calling the Boston Tea Party.
King George III isn’t an unjust ruler. He’s doing the best he can in a difficult situation. (SH)
The taxes are to pay for the French and Indian War, which was fought to protect the colonies. (JD)
A nation without taxes is impractical. (JD)
Solution:
Allow the colonies to act as their own
Allow colonists to have a voice in parliament (HWP)
Let them control trade and government
Act as a big brother
Help them when they need it
Colonists decide on the payment to the crown for their services
Once or twice a year a few representatives could go and talk to parliament and have our input added (NB)

Arguments that will be made by Patriots:
We don’t have any representation Parliament. (AL)
The governor could go (or send someone) to speak to parliament on the colonists behalf. (UR)
If the colonists truly wanted representation they would have taken action and sent someone there by themselves (AL)
Blocking of the harbor
Colonists weren’t following trade laws
Placement of troops in the colonies protection against riots and revolts
INTOLERABLE ACT
Justifiable for the damage the Boston Tea Party had on British trade. Britain had a lot of debt at the time (goes for other taxes as well)
Treatment was unfair towards the colonists (RP)
Colonists acted out and needed to be punished like a child
King George III wasn’t an unjust ruler, he was just making the best out of a bad situation

Taxes put into place because of french + indian war started by colonists moving onto land that isn’t theirs
People have rights government can’t take away like property (EK)
Repercussion of colonists acts
British soldiers are causing the chaos in the Colonies.
Crown had to restore order in colony- sent troops--->colonists provoked and mistreated. (Boston Massacre) + (Boston Tea Party) + Tarring and Feathering- way of torture that Patriots used to hurt loyalists- poured hot tar on loyalists and covered them in feathers and forced them to parade in the streets. (AL) (EK) we have done our parts in the french and indian war, by fighting in it (NB)
They still had to help pay the debts because, after all, they were in the war (RP) and caused it britain having a king and queen is corrupt, and we have the right to overthrow a corrupt government(NB)
It’s better than the government the colonists couldn’t decide on
Boston Massacre (AL)
British troops were provoked and riots and violence was inevitable (AL) could not avoid assault since the colonists would not stop harassing(HWP) we don’t need Britian we could trade with other foreign countries(HWP)
The other foreign countries may exploit us and vanquish us with their powerful armies and professional Troops (EK) not taken seriously
We do have a chance of defeating Britain, right now they are spread out between different continents and colonies

Patrick Henry’s argument on declaring independence on Great Britain and going to war was an inspiring speech that has shined a new light on the subject of whether to declare independence or stay loyal to a country that has done us more harm than good and has ultimately led me to become a rebel. I have become a rebel for two main reasons, our petitions that they have not noticed were an attempt at peace and the mistreatment from the last ten years. To start, petitions had not been productive whatsoever. When Britain had done something that had made us miserable, we decided to meet in the middle and make peace with Britain though petitions. Unfortunately Britain had ignored and disregarded us and our petitions, and instead, had sent us harm and…

The conservative Loyalists had strong intentions of remaining patriotic to Great Britain, but not to the land in which they lived in. The Loyalists faction typically consisted of traditional colonists, government officials and Anglican clergymen who were taught fidelity to the crown. The majority of Loyalists during the war tended to be wealthier than the American Patriots; thus, they considered themselves to be more civilized than the average colonists and doubted amateur American…

Although colonists had united to raise a militia to fight the French, the British insisted on using British troops and having British Generals in command. Before the 1700’s, British involvement with the colonies was minor which allowed individual colonies to practice their own politics and trade international without regulations. Many generals remarked of the inferiority of Americans and their rude actions and behavior towards British officials. This was a start of many political and economic misunderstandings that caused a backfire to the British that ultimately damaged their empire, their economic standings, and their overall reputation. The war also created an environment that fostered the want for Americans to be equal to English citizens and have the same rights. These views and mindsets encouraged major political philosophies to begin to form, further shaping the American identity of civil rights, liberty, and republicanism. An important factor that separated the Seven Years’ War from other wars between the British and French, was that it was fought in America, thus involving colonial militia and drawing out the major flaws that the British either underestimated or didn’t take into consideration. For example, British subjects didn’t realize the difference between the colonies and England, and the political and economical structure that had formed over the last century in the colonies. By overlooking these important factors, such as the colonies having Assemblies, a democratic form of local government, and controlling international affairs, England underestimated the will of the people and the power of the…

The British should not have even had the war to begin with. There are a few commonsensical reasons why the war could, and even should, have been avoid. The entire Revolutionary War could have been avoided if the British had just given the colonists a seat in parliament. In the beginning, the colonists were protesting against being taxed without having any representation in parliament. The colonists also did not like the fact that they where being forced to house British troops in their homes. If parliament had stopped housing British troops in colonist's houses, many conflicts…

The colonists should secede from the British Empire because without them there will be no more unconstitutional taxations. There have been many acts for unconstitutional taxations such as the Stamp Act and the Townshend Acts, both of which placed taxations upon the colonists, and yet colonists are not allowed representation in Parliament! This is taxation without representation! It is against the British Constitution. It is argued that the some of the taxes Great Britain places on us go to our protection, but more of them go towards repaying the British debts from the French-Indian War. The colonists could have their own taxes, lower ones that we can use to build our own armies and protect ourselves! Loyalist argue that the Colonies don’t have the of the resources to protect themselves, but if they go to war with the British Empire, the enemies of the British such as the French, who are still sore over losing Quebec, will fight…

How do you do? I wanted to say that I agree with your statement about how you should be against independence. I also believe that you should not go against Britain and not have independence. The Loyalists should not break away because then they will lose an important ally who has a powerful navy. You wrote that "by a connection with Great Britain, our trade would still have the protection if the greatest naval power in the world." I support your belief because you considered the bad things that would happen once the Loyalists declared independence, and it outweighs the pros. "Blood would be spilt, and thousands reduced to beggary and wretchedness," was what you said if the American colonies would not give up their fight. Why not avoid all the…

We the patriots of america believe that we should be separate from Great Britain for many reasons. We feel that we are being over taxed. King George had us pay for his French and Indian War. We did not want to go into this war but he made us. To get back his money he came up with several laws and new taxes, such as the Stamp act, the Sugar act, and the quartering act. We were treated very unfairly by Great Britain. They made us house and completely take care of their soldiers all at our expense. We have no voice or say in how much we are taxed, when we are taxed, or even why we are taxed.…
