Love the way you lie speech.
Imagine, waking each day next to your so called “partner”. Being scared to talk, or even wake them. Why? Because you are afraid of the rage that could explode from them and the actions that result from this. So why not just leave and get out of the relationship you say? Well, you can’t. If you tried the consequences would be much worse than remaining in the relationship. Good morning Year 11 and teachers. American hip hop artist EMINEM’s song; ‘Love the Way You Lie’ conveys the concept of power and manipulation by concisely breaking down the cycle of domestic violence and consistent threats of physical abuse.
Eminem’s lyrics describe an abusive relationship between a man and a woman from the perpetrators point of view. His lyrics explain that he is well aware that his actions are wrong, but he is not willing to let her go, thus, he uses his dominance in the relationship to force her into submitting, and remaining in physical and emotional turmoil.
This is clearly noticeable in the later stages of the song, when Eminem states: “If she ever tries to leave again I’ma tie her to the bed and set this house on fire.” This line dictates to the listeners the disturbing mental process associated with power and domestic violence, and also allows the listeners to comprehend the masochistic nature of such relationships.
Critics report that Eminem has perfectly captured the cycle of domestic violence, allowing him to effectively draw the sympathetic listeners further into the story. This allows the lyrics to connect on a personal level with some listeners who may be experiencing a similar situation, or know someone who is. Repeatedly we hear the perpetrator promising that these acts of violence will never happen again, and that he will change because he loves her. But really all these statements are blatant lies, and in no time he will be back up to his old tricks. Exposing her vulnerability and submission, he manipulates her into thinking that she is deserving of such pain,

“Don’t Hurt Yourself” was the type of song that could leave any true Beyoncé fan a bit shocked. Usually she is not so blatantly vulgar and instead keeps a cleaner image, but that all went south with this particular music video. In the “Anger” portion of Lemonade, Beyoncé allows herself to be genuinely angry in such an unapologetic way. For once, a black woman has let herself feel all of her rage from the lens of a black woman herself, instead of through the eyes of an onlooker who does not live the same experience. In the “Intuition” portion of of Lemonade before the song “Hold Up”, the poetic lines describe how, “In the tradition of men in my blood, you come home at 3 a.m. and lie to me. What are you hiding? The past and the future merge to meet us here. What luck. What a f*cking curse.” This prompted the discussion of the way that black love exists and functions for me. Due to the horrors of the past, the way we experience our love has been damaged and altered to such a point that we as black women feel as though we have to accept any type of treatment from the one we truly love. It has become such a deep…

In verse two he uses rain as reference to his current situation. ‘You know it's funny when it rains it pours”(2pac). Meaning when bad things happen other more difficult situations seem to occur at the same time. Another figurative language that he uses are Idioms. He doesn't have that much , but he is trying to make it the best way he can. “I'm trying to make a dollar out of fifteen cent” (2pac). One of most interesting part of this song is when he talks about blaming his mother for turning his brother into a crack baby. “We ain't meant to survive , cause it's a setup” (2pac). Which goes in to explain that the government want the black community to…

Domestic violence involves women, men, and children alike, no matter what kind of relationship the person may be in. Domestic violence occurs in many religions, social classes, and even ethnic classes and it affects everyone. The national coalition against domestic violence states that domestic violence is "the willful intimidation physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systemic pattern of power and control perpetuated by one intimate partner against another". The frequency and severity of the domestic violence varies, however one of the constant features of domestic violence is that one of the partners is constantly trying to maintain power and control over the other. Domestic violence is “a pattern of behavior used to establish power and control over another person through fear and intimidation, often including the threat or use of violence,” according to Safe Horizon (SH, 2015). Domestic violence can occur in many different relationships, such as parent-child relationships, dating couples relationships, or even sibling relationships. The psychological consequences of domestic violence are overlooked, most of the time, by people with the speculation that the victim can always just leave their attackers. Only about half of the cases of domestic violence are actually reported to authorities, according to the Feminist Majority Foundation (FMH, 2014). Battered…

It is true that some of his music can be somewhat violent and explicit but this is what happened to him and he is willing to tell his story. What makes people listen is that he is being so open about it and they can relate to certain materials he went through. His song “Not Afraid” is also a good song to relate things to. This song is about how Eminem is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in and what he thinks is right. It is an influence on individuals for them to do the same. Basically it is…

Close to the Edge: The Representational Tactics of Eminem a comprehensive essay written by Marcia Alesan Dawkins, provides a concrete, insightful examination of the strategy and tactics used by a Caucasian artist to integrate himself into the predominantly African-American and Latino dominated sub culture of hip-hop. The purpose of this document is to illuminate the methods utilized by what Dawkins calls the Other to seamlessly sneak into a racially charged social group and gain acceptance amongst its critics and audiences. This is someone who would otherwise be labelled as an outcast from the point of view of its patrons. Such methods draw from Michel de Certeau’s stages of cultural navigation, which Dawkins makes use of to support the analysis. The focus of this analysis is of course Eminem’s conscious and effective employment of these three stages: appropriation, “spatial acting out of the place” and allocution, in order to represent himself as a talented artist. The significance of Dawkins paper lies in its clear and concise ability to communicate with other spectators and critics of hip-hop and in doing so offer insight as to why others haven’t been able to mimic the same path Eminem has taken to be successful in the art form. The general idea inferred from this article is that of the sameness and otherness, which is believed to be a large component of America’s racially divided entertainment industry. Dawkins therefore refers to this concept continually as the underlining argument to reinforce her analysis of Eminem’s representational tactics.…

Child exposure to domestic violence is something that is happening way too often in the United States today. This is a personal crime that affects not only the adults involved but the children who are witnesses to it as well. In the song you will hear unorthodox and sensitive methods of figurative language. “Flow like the blood of Abraham through the Jews and the Arabs, Broken apart like a woman's heart, abused in a marriage, the brink of holy war, bottled up, like a miscarriage” This line is layered with symbolism and similes. He cleverly uses biblical stories with emotional tragedy to describe the splitting of a nation with foreshadows of war. As a listener it’s hard not to feel emotion with this imagery.…
