A Thematic Analysis of Love Story by Bernard Gadd
Roy Ebrecht Love Story by: Bernard Gadd In the short story, love story written by Bernard Gadd there are three main important ideas in the story. Racial discrimination, young love and family conflict. In the story there are two main characters, Asofa and Lynne. They fall in love with each other and they have a lot in common even though there families disapprove of their relationship. The first important idea is racial discrimination. Racial discrimination is shown in the story as two main characters Asofa and Lynne from different cultures and ethnic group/background. Asofa is a Samoan and Lynne is Maori and when they start their relationship, their families discriminates each others race. A quote to show this idea is when Asofa`s sisters say ‘ they are rough people’ . This relates badly to society as quite often people mistakenly stereotype or make assumptions on others, based on how they look. The second important theme in the short story is young love. This theme is important because the two main characters Asofa and Lynne fall in love and begin a romantic relationship during their high school years.
Unfortunately, like many teenage relationships it doesn't last. Lynne breaks up with
Asofa, leaving him heart broken. An example that shows this is “so im saying goodbye and thanks and I love you”. Young love is an important theme because it relates to many teenagers. The third important theme in the love story is family conflict. This theme is shown in the text when Asofa`s family disagrees with his Maori girlfriend Lynne. This however causes a family conflict between both their families. A quote from the text shows that
“Why can't you find a nice Samoan girl, perhaps from the church’’.
A family conflict has an important theme because there are many teenagers who live in a country with many diverse cultures.
