Love is duty
Love is unpredictable and can never be studied completely. St. Augustine said “Better to have loved and lost, then to have never loved at all.” No matter how long I live on this wonderful planet I will never forget her, she was the first girl I had ever connected with on an emotional and spiritual level. I first caught a glimpse of her at a conference in Austin, Texas, at the Grand Marriott hotel we became very close over a period of time, and then we inevitably drifted apart.
It was a gloomy Saturday morning and my day was already planned out I got dressed, ate breakfast, had conversation with friends and then made my way to the lobby for registration. I arrived in Austin, Texas a little after midnight making me exhausted after the road trip. After I reached the hotel that night my time was limited. I couldn’t explore or admire anything; my main focus was reaching the bedroom and checking out those sweet hotel room beds. Since I was up and ready I began to observe the hotel. It was a five star Marriott hotel that had a total of 30 floors; each containing a 24 hour customer service. It was summer so the lobby was beach themed palm trees at every door, Hawaiian music was playing even the employees attire consisted of short and flowered button down shirts. After reaching satisfaction from taking a look at the lobby I went to go register. As I walked and greeted people I saw familiar faces from people I had seen back home that made me feel even more secure. I entered the conference center with my lanyard hanging down my neck with “Jabril Muhammad” in big letters. I sat down in the farthest seat from the front and waited for the conference to begin.
After 30 minutes of lectures from different speakers, I began to slowly go into a deep sleep. Just as I closed my eyelids, the next presenter reached the stage. Her appearance lit up the room like a single flare of fire in an atramentous cave. She

In that heart-freezing, gut-wrenching moment, all eyes were on me. I whirled madly in my seat, scanning the entire audience. The bright room silhouetted the soft but unmistakable shadow of a woman. But there was no one there, of course. There couldn’t have been – yet I definitely did not feel alone.…

I woke up tired on a beautiful, sunny, Tuesday morning. It was the day I had to fly to San Francisco for my job on a cruise ship. I had been in between cruises, so I had taken the chance to come see my parents in Newark, New Jersey. Later I realized that it could have cost me dearly. I changed into my pressed, white, long sleeved shirt with khaki pants and my sailors hat that I had to wear for my job as a deckhand. I arrive at Newark Liberty International Airport a hour before my flight, where I hug my parents goodbye. I walk in and go through security easily and go to my gate and wait for thirty minutes until we would be able to board.…

I’d been working towards this day forever now. Hundreds of humble yet horror-inducing faces stared me down. The buzzing speakers broke the silence in the auditorium, but I was grateful for it. If it was completely silent, I might have been jumpier than frog’s legs in a frying pan. More than I already was. I had waited for 63 people to finish, a good amount of them getting knocked out one by one. Now it was my turn.…

Out of all the relationships I have had all of them pale in comparison to my wife and me. How we met is deemed by most people as weird but more intriguing is what basis our relationship started on. At first contact, I was very heart broken and I needed someone to talk to about it to. I met Christina on a social networking site and at this time people were very skeptical about internet relationships. What was supposed to stop at friendship ended up developing into a very loving relationship but not before its difficulties? Just like Robert Stemberg’s theory on love explains about the three dimensions of love which are passion, intimacy, and commitment. To what degree a relationship demonstrates these dimensions would illustrate the type of love relationship you have. In the beginning it was pretty clear that my soon to be wife and I were probably just very fascinated in one another but this soon turned into strong passion and intimacy in time. After several months of dating the word marriage came up for the first time and it scared me to death. My fight or flight response kicked in and I quickly ended the relationship because I had commitment issues. My commitment issues were probably brought on from an earlier age. I lost my mother to lung cancer and my father from a heart attack not long after graduating high school and losing the two people you love the most can easily make it hard to whole heartedly love again in fear of losing again. I believe this is what sparked me to leave so suddenly when marriage was mentioned. Finally six months later we got back together and was married on October 19 2012. In spite of everything endured we had all three dimensions of love and after two years nothing could bring us apart.…

It was summer 2009. My husband surprised me with tickets to Las Vegas, for our second anniversary. Our 4 days vacation package included air ticket, car and hotel. I was all excited, and packed all beautiful and colorful dresses appropriate for Las Vegas temperature. We were advised ahead by our friends to stay indoors during day time, as it is going to be too hot and humid in Las Vegas at this time of the year. On June 20th 2009 we flew from Virginia to Las Vegas in an American Airlines flight. By the time we reached there, it was 11pm in Las Vegas. Time in Las Vegas is 3 hours behind our Eastern Time. We picked our rented SUV at the airport, and went straight to our hotel Circus Circus, located at the crossroads of Tropicana Road and Las Vegas Strip. We booked this hotel for its indoor amusement park, and the free circus. We were put in one of the west tower rooms, which were located directly above the hotel lobby, with close proximity to shopping promenade and Adventure dome. We slept for couple of hours. We started our vacation first with the casino strip road. The place looked beautiful, lively, and fully packed with people, vehicles, and casinos on either side of the road. I felt myself in a dream land with all the lightning from the casinos, with the noise coming from vehicles, laughter, fun and music. I felt my two eyes are not sufficient to see the beauty of the sight.…

    What Is Duty

    • 3211 Words

It is necessary in the study of Karma-Yoga to know what duty is. If I have to do something I must first know that it is my duty, and then I can do it. The idea of duty again is different in different nations. The Mohammedan says what is written in his book, the Koran, is his duty; the Hindu says what is in the Vedas is his duty; and the Christian says what is in the Bible is his duty. We find that there are varied ideas of duty, differing according to different states in life, different historical periods and different nations. The term "duty", like every other universal abstract term, is impossible clearly to define; we can only get an idea of it by knowing its practical operations and results. When certain things occur before us, we have all a natural or trained impulse to act in a certain manner towards them; when this impulse comes, the mind begins to think about the situation. Sometimes it thinks that it is good to act in a particular manner under the given conditions; at other times it thinks that it is wrong to act in the same manner even in the very same circumstances. The ordinary idea of duty everywhere is that every good man follows the dictates of his conscience. But what is it that makes an act a duty? If a Christian finds a piece of beef before him and does not eat it to save his own life, or will not give it to save the life of another man, he is sure to feel that he has not done his duty. But if a Hindu dares to eat that piece of beef or to give it to another Hindu, he is equally sure to feel that he too has not done his duty; the Hindu's training and education make him feel that way. In the last century there were notorious bands of robbers in India called thugs; they thought it their duty to kill any man they could and take away his money; the larger the number of men they killed, the better they thought they were. Ordinarily if a man goes out into the street and shoots down another man, he is apt to feel sorry for it, thinking that…
