BOOK REPORT

The book I have read is called "Love in Another Town" and the author is Barbara Taylor Bradford. The main theme of this book is about a broken marriage. The main characters, Jake and Maggie, are both separated from their partners. They become lovers. Unfortunately, their ex-husband and ex-wife get problem and need their help. They are facing a huge test, testing whether they are deeply loved with each other or not.

Kent Connedicut is picturesque beckons to both Jake and Maggie. They are involved in a dramatics group and are introduced by Samantha who is also from a broken marriage. Jake and Maggie finally fall in love and have a happy time among them. When they are enjoying their happy period, Jake's ex-wife told him that she

    Fiction Response When reading the short story “Love in L.A.” by Dagoberta Gilb most readers will notice the importance of the characters and how they shape the outcome of the story. This story is truly character driven, meaning the plot relies on the characters, which makes it a very powerful literary element in this case. Jake, the protagonist of the fictional piece, can easily be envisioned as a young man with a carefree attitude who does not really care much about other people and their situations. One can tell Jake is definitely a pretty young man due to some of the things he daydreams about at the beginning of the story and the fact that he is daydreaming instead of paying attention to the road. Some of these thoughts include the brief idea of getting a steady job and his fantasies regarding his lifestyle (Gilb, 113). His carefree attitude can be seen through his dialogue with Mariana after the accident with remarks such as “So how ya doing? Any damage to the car? I’m kinda hoping so, just so it takes a little more time and we can talk some. Or else you can give me your phone number now and I won’t have to lay my regular b.s. on you to get it later.” (Gilb, 114) Even though Jake has just been in a car accident he was at fault for that could have severely injured someone he still has the idea of flirting with one of the other drivers involved. Jake is also the kind of guy who prefers to stay out of trouble for his own sake and his wallet’s, which is why he gives Mariana false information and uses license plates from scrapped cars in order to avoid paying for things he doesn’t want to pay for (Gilb, 114-115). Jake’s young, carefree attitude is seen again after he drives off from the accident with him instantly going back to fantasizing about making his car awesome without a single worry about what just happened (Gilb 115).…

    And Mrs. Smith, by Doug Liman, two people are stuck in betrayal because of their jobs. This betrayal exists because they are both spies working for opposite affiliations and are married. In a couple’s counseling session they discuss their betrayal burying it beneath back and forth comments and useless arguments. First, there is the trust and love that they supposedly have built a relationship on. This is seen when Jane says “When we met I loved everything about him. I’d say 90% of the things” (Liman). John on the other hand feels that “Marriage is about trust. Period.” (Liman). At one point John sees Jane in a foreign country and to prevent the strange woman from going to jail he tells the police, “No. No. No. Esta bien. She’s with me.” (Liman), the first trust building action. In another counseling session, the doctor asked if she has been truthful and her reply is “Pretty honest. It’s not like I lie to him, but I have secrets. Everybody has secrets.” (Liman), the secrets referring to her job as a spy, causing her to betray John. This shows that she was betraying him but only out of love. Mr. and Mrs. Smith discover their mutual subterfuge and quickly experience the agonies of betrayal. They betray each other in their work and relationship because they live secret lives of service that are falsified and competently counterfeit. They betray each other feeling that its in each other’s best interest and also to avoid the consequences of endangering one another’s life. They realize the secret between them, that they are working for two rival companies. Soon after follows a fight. “Jane sees John. She fires fast! Bullet’s rip up the walls” (Liman). At first, aghast at the shared betrayal, they use the subsequent conflict to live out those, "I loved him so I had to kill him." (Liman), visions that everyone’s had at one point in time.     Smith uses indirect and direct characterization to evince how Hadley is a clumsy and unlucky person. Hadley first reveals her clumsy sides by forgetting her stuff, making everything drop on the floor or being late for her plane. Not only she misses her plane, but she also has to sleep in a tiny airport chamber, being claustrophobic. Smith says “Or later: if she hadn’t given herself a paper cut while printing out her ticket, if she hadn’t lost her charger, if there hadn’t been traffic on the expressway to the airport.” And “She readjusts the backpack on her lap, realizing a moment too late that she didn’t zip it up all the way, and a few of her things tumble to the floor.” These incidents reveal that Hadley is for sure not the luckiest person on Earth, and show an unlucky and clumsy side to her personality. Secondly, she has to go to London to see the wedding of her father and his new future wife. Throughout the first two chapters and prologue, Hadley insists on the fact that she does not want to see her dad for the simple reason that he hurt her mother and herself. Smith wrote “the word dad had become an unpleasant reminder” to express Hadley’s thoughts about her father. Only by reading this thought, we know that Hadley also has family problems, so again, is not very lucky. Thirdly, Hadley reveals her unlucky side by being embarrassed in front of the cute boy in the airplane. Smith states “She isn’t sure whether he’ll be joining her, and this possibly gives the decision a slightly frenzied feel; she can practically feel him waiting beside her, and her whole body is tense as she tries to think of the option that is the least likely to leave her with food all over her face, just in case he decides to come along.” This inside thought shows that Hadley gets embarrassed and panicked very easily and that is the reason why she is a clumsy and unlucky…

    Love in L.A.” is a story that is set on the streets of Los Angeles in the heat of traffic. Love should be an emotion of strong affection and personal attachment (DK). But in the short story Love in L.A., the definition of love is the exact opposite. Through “Jake,” the protagonist’s definition of “love” is expressed in different fashions, none results in anything positive outcome; He portrays being lazy, irresponsible, somewhat poor, and perhaps something of a scam artist, looking for his freedom. “Jake was thinking about this freedom of his so much that when he glimpsed its green light he just went ahead and stared bye-bye to the steadily employed.
